Appearance: Outstanding. Pours to a deep reddish-orange with a moderate tan head of foam. The foam endures a moderate time, ringing and lacing the glass.
Smell: I certainly detect malt with some hints of coffee, very light smoke overtones, hints of caramel and perhaps a subtle hint of hops.
Taste: Nothing overpowers, but there are a lot of subtle tastes at work here. Opens with smooth malty character and finishes with some gentle hops flavor that balances out the finish -- in fact, it tilts slightly bitter to my palette. I picked up what might be a slightly bitter plum flavor prior to the finish.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, rich, but with a little bite of carbonation. Not as smooth and creamy as some other Scotch Ales I've tried, but quite nice nonetheless.
Drinkability: Good. At 8.30 ABV, and with a moderately complex taste, I'm going to spend a bit more time with this brew than I might with something less complex.
This is a good example of the style. Holds up well with a variety of foods, and is especially enjoyable on a cool evening. Purchased at Whole Foods in Dublin, Ohio.
