I had lunch in a sports bar, Taco Mac for my Atlanta neighbors. After hot wings and a Highland Oatmeal Porter, I ordered a Dirty Bastard, my first. They listed it as a strong ale on the menu; I just now see it's a Scotch ale.
Copper to brown with a thin head, but looks substantial, a manly man's ale. :-)
Smelled of caramel malt, sweet, but not over the top. Maybe chocolate or perhaps some faint coffee as well. The alcohol was noticeable.
The malt sweetness dominated but, surprisingly, a bitterness was detectable particularly on the finish. I'm even more surprised now, seeing it's a Scotch ale. All in all a very balanced and delicious ale. The alcohol was deviously hidden by the geniuses at Founders. I wasn't in a hurry, but it disappeared way too quickly. I was really pleased with myself for the adventurous choice and couldn't wait to order another until I stood up to use the restroom. My arse was kicked.
The mouthfeel was medium and perfectly carbonated, but I'm not sure how to rate the drinkability. As measured by how much I wanted another it rates high, but its relatively high ABV wouldn't allow me to have another and still be able to drive home.
It will not be my last Dirty Bastard, that's for sure. What I remember of the only other Scotch ale I've had, a Sam Adams, Dirty Bastard was a little different with the hoppy bitter finish.

A: it's a pretty deep auburn color with a transient, thin white head and little lacing
S: sweet malts, slightly nutty, fragrant fruits like cherries, perhaps candi sugar?
T: really liked the taste here, it's a balanced sweetness with slight hops in the after taste. I was hoping for a bit more peat flavor or nose, but I'm not disappointed. Lots of sweet malts and fruits.
M: slightly effervescent but a good complement to the sweetness
O: a really good beer. I could have a few of these in an evening. Good for dessert in the springtime
