Consumed November 21st, 2013. Bottled on date: 12/13/12. Poured into my trusty Bruery tulip.
Beer is a deep maroon/brown pour with the deepest highlights I have ever seen that I could still call "amber". A one-finger light beige head composed of very fine bubbles erupts on the pour then settles to a thin skin of foam, providing nominal sheeting.
Aroma is stronger than I anticipated from an 8.5% and a bottle that is nearly a year old. Brown sugar/molasses is the primary note, but there's also a boozy candied fruit component. Vague notes of cinnamon and fruitcake. Also something a little off and unpleasant, but I can't put my finger on it.
Thick, nearly syrupy brown sugar malt flavors dominate the palate. Cinnamon note appears fleetingly on the tongue. Towards the end of the sip, an assertive though well-modulated wash of woody bitterness wells up, cleaning up the almost over-sweet front end. Slight alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel is a little thick with some burn on the tongue.
Not the best wee heavy I've ever had, but a perfectly respectable effort.
