Single bottle poured into a tulip glass.
Appearance: Very little foam upon pouring - I would get some back after swirling in the glass, but it would never stick around. No lacing either. A dark tarnished copper color - just a little light going through.
Smell: Lots of malt with some fruit-like alcohol notes. Quite pleasant.
Taste: Strong caramel and toffee up front, with something fruity (figs?) at the end. The higher alcohol content in this beer is perfectly masked. The caramel and toffee get a little stronger and sweeter as the beer warms up. Not cloyingly sweet, but still more sweet than I expected.
Mouthfeel: Mild carbonation on tongue, but thick and coating on the way down. I hesitate to call it syrupy - but I kept thinking this in light of the sweetness.
Drinkability: Not bad, but I think the strong sweetness of the malts was too much here. It needed some bitterness or something at the end to round it out. The ABV though is nicely warming in the winter, but not too strong. I almost think the beer is mis-named as it's not a Dirty Bastard at all, but more like a Polite Scotsman. That being said, I don't see how anyone could have more than one of these in a sitting - too much sweet and too high ABV to have more than one in an evening.
