I guess I didnt know what to expect with this one. I have had only one other Scotch ale to compare this one to.
It poured darker than I expected. The amber head didnt lst very long. Holding the glass up to a light, it seemed just a shade darker than some red ales.
The aroma was very pleasant. Nothing hitting me directly, just a blend of malt, minor hops, vanilla, carmel, a little butterscotch and a hint of citrus.
The taste was very smooth, relatively big and round and soft.
The actual mouthful and after taste left me somewhat wanting a bit more. I think that is the only reason I did not rate this one higher.
Tasted this beer again. I am fairly new at the Scotch Wee-Heavy beers. I am trying to better understand them in order to know if I like this style. This one from Founders provided a very big up font tasting. My mouth was full of a big beer. Not hoppy, not malty, , just big. The mouthful was also the same. But on the back end, I felt like that aftertaste was not all that appealing. There was a taste of somewhat burnt coffee beans or charcoal'd wood at the end.
That left the finish not the way this one started out. I think that was my major reason why, I couldnt give this one higher grades

This scotch ale pours a deep brownish mahogany hue with a very slight off white head that leaves a thin film and substantial lacing. The aroma is deep, rich, and sweet. Lots of burnt sugar caramel and toffee notes plus a little vanilla and alcohol. It is definitely a thicker side of medium bodied beer with lots of coating sweetness. The flavor is amazing. Lots of rich malts following the profile set up by the nose. There is a little bitterness on the tail that just makes one want to dive back in for another sip of the awesome caramely malts on the front end. This is a great example of this style and always a favorite from one of my favorite breweries.
