Smells like chocolate and rum
Tastes like toffee, malty, caramel, with a hint of chocolate.
Smooth yet chalky with a very mild booziness.
This is a great beer :)

Bottle from Founders first shipment to CA into a tulip glass. Liked most attributes of the beer, but wanted more out of the mouth feel and finish. May revisit this rating once I'm further through the 6 pack.

Has a dark brown/red complexion with an off white head that doesn't stay around long. Very nice lacing. Smells like a porter with.. Well.. Scotch. And the taste follows. If you're drinking at cellar temperature it really stands out. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is a little wet, kind of slick, and bitter. Very very high drinkabilty at 8.5%

12 oz. bottle poured into nonic

L: ruby red ... crimson, clear; pushes up a 1/2-inch head of tan foam, no major sticking or lacing

S: big sweet malt, very Scotch feeling with hints of peat, some earthiness and a little sour grain mixed in; wants to smell like a stout, but it never hits those coffee/espresso notes, keeping just a little "lighter" ... fruitcake

T: lots of darker malt flavors, some definite peat, almost a bit of oak-wood/smoke, though it's in no way burnt like many a stout; perhaps a bit of medicinal alcohol burn, but at times it takes on such a peaty taste it's closer to scotch flavored than the typical vodka-shots/rubbing alcohol medicinal note some beers have; dates, prunes ... really sweet on the back end, then pumpkin/earth/dirt takes over

F: pretty thick despite looking clear and light, great carbonation, solid weight for a big beer

O: this brew is not to be trifled with ... it's big all around, packed with flavor, and pound-for-pound it's 8.5% ABV is a full a punch as any I've come across -- two 12 oz. bottles of this brew is a session for me, and a damn good session at that; the malt flavors run the gamut of all that's arguably possible in a Scotch Ale, including peat, wood, earthy dirt along with a lot of sweetness at times that reminds you of a good sweet stout but isn't 100% stout-like ... a beer I wouldn't mind having around to sip on come winter time

Pour is a dark brown with ruby hints. Two finger tan head dissipated quickly. Some lacing. I could not detect any significant aroma. Taste was sweet malt and a bit of hops on the end. Medium thickness and carbonation. Not sure what's wrong but my taste buds cannot seem to detect much else. This is good but I cannot detect the complexity that I was expecting. But, I will try again soon.

Look is dark brown and hazy with no head.

Smell is rich roast malt and a molasses sweetness.

Taste is sweet from the malt but definitely a hop bite, lives up to the name.

12oz Bottle Poured Into 13oz Tulip
Bottled — 11/29/14
Tasted — 09/26/15

A — Pours a really deep and rich looking brownish leathery hue into the glass, there are some real nice ruby reddish tinges around the edges as well. There is a thin khaki colored head that tried to stick around but failed, leaving minimalist lacing.

S — This smells extremely Scotch like as soon as the cap is popped off the bottle, smells reminiscent of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich Speside malts, just delicious. As it warms up there are notes of leather, chocolate, raisins.

T — Taste is of rich malt, with layers of flavors, nice notes of bitter bakers chocolate, some bourbony raisin character as well. Big hit of scotch again, almost like a Single Malt.

M — Medium bodied, rich and warming

O — Very nice overall, this is almost a bit sweet, but I really enjoyed it.

Poured from a 12oz bottle (bottled on 14May15) into a thistle glass.
LOOK: Pours with a quarter's worth of khaki foam that halves itself after one minute. Dark copper in color. Looks like tea. Rising bubbles are subtle. Lacing is thin and low.
SMELL: Has strong aromas of molasses, figs, and prunes that meet with mild aromas of smokey goodness, tree nuts and subtle bitter hops.
TASTE: Mild flavors of molasses, figs, prunes, and bready malts (weren't detected by the nose) are up front. Mild tree nut flavors and subtle smoked goodness enter immediately after. As subtle bitter hops and hints of alcohol (weren't detected by nose, either. Is it broken today?) enter lastly, both smoked goodness and tree nut flavors grow stronger as initial flavors persist.
FEEL: Medium-bodied and subtly carbonated. Goes down somewhat smooth and creamy and clings to the back of the throat. Finishes subtly dry.

Pours a beautiful dark amber, with a caramel-colored head; great aroma, with some booze; light mouth-feel; great flavor, can definitely taste the scotch. This is a great beer, and one I could happily drink anytime.

A : A deep scarlet purple color with almost 100% opacity. The head is small but solid, measuring at 2 fingers and khaki in color. Hilly lace leaves its mark as it recedes to a mossy ring on top of the bold body.

S : Lots of traditional wee heavy aromas - sweet and roasted plum, tons of caramel drizzled malts, some green lettuce leaf, and fig. Very nice and traditional nose for this beer.

T : A sting of hops out front, with some prunes and dates lying slightly underneath. The amount of hops in this Scotch Ale are almost overwhelming. The alcohol is apparent with a sting and burn drying out the palate as the beer disappears.

F : Heavily carbonated, parched and dry like sandpaper, yet still wet enough to whet the palate, and ends tart.

O : This beer is okay but doesn't even touch Moylan's Kilt Lifter. A little hoppy for a Scotch in my personal opinion though.

A smooth scotch/brown ale with a nice mix of vanilla, nut, butter, toffee and caramel. Even with all of those flavors it balances nicely, with an aftertaste that sort of reminds me of a Werther's candy. This is my 2nd Founders after the incredible Breakfast Stout, will definitely be on the lookout for more of their offerings.

A descent rendition of a scotch ale, not hoppy (which is good thing for this style) Poured a deep burgundy nearly black. I did not notice anything especial in the nose with this, had expected more there. Has a average mouth feel nothing to right home about there, as for taste It is true to the style and has good malt complexity and a suble sweet maybe caramel taste, cherry , coffee, and pine nut. A good scotch ale.

I feel like this beer is really well balanced. It's not cloyingly sweet as some others of similar style can be. The sweetness is toned down by the other flavor elements and the carbonation, and it definitely is hiding the 8.5 abv well. If you like this I would recommend Troegs' Troegenator Doublebock which brings a lot of similar aspects to the table. Cheers!

There were ample amounts of khaki colored foam after the pour from a 12oz bottle. This beer is a very dark reddish brown in color, but still lets a bit of light through. When the foam dies down, there is nice lacing that continues and leaves a nice foam ring around the glass.

First smells are of rich caramel and chocolate. Some aroma of alcohol is present in this 8.5%'er.

Quite a bit of hop bitterness up front, but then strong smokey caramel, tobacco, and chocolate notes take turns on your taste buds. Then soon after, a strong shot of alcohol breaks through. There is a slight sour flavor that fades, dryly, into bitter chocolate notes.

This is a very full bodied beer that feels thick, rich, and almost chewy.

This is a GREAT Scotch Ale... one of the better ones that I have had. The fading flavor is a bit drier than I would like and it seems a bit hoppier than the style guidelines, but very good.

I feel feel feel that it's good, but it was just another brew. I don't know maybe not into scotch ales. Or maybe the other beers I had right before it was better. Their porter was really good, and their triple IPA hid the abv well. Idk, it wasn't one of their better beers.

A very balanced scotch ale, especially or its abv, but unfortunately I had their porter right before it which blew it out of the water. Not bad though, would buy again.

Though I am not a huge fan of Scotch ales, I decided to give this one a try because of all the good things I have heard about it; and I have got to say, it is truly a fantastic beer. Nice dark and rich color, with a thick (if a bit small) head gives this beer a lovely appearance. Taste wise, it is very heavy and rich with flavor. Though it does nicely capture the essence of a Scotch ale very well, the strong taste may turn off those with softer pallets. Overall, however, if you are prepared for a strong and rich Scotch ale, this beer should definitely be on your list.

Part of a Founder's score at a recently rediscovered liquor store that seems to have all that TW doesn't have. Bottled 5/11/15 so this is a mere pup at 3 months of age. Let's give it a whirl! Popping the top I get a luxurious waft of red and black licorice and and caramel with a hint of roasted malts. On the pour this brew is a deep red and rootbeer brown with a multi sized bubble head that recedes slowly and laces. On the taste this brew is classically butterscotch sweet up front then has a robust balance of roasted malts with a bear claw like hop bitterness that clings and then fades to a sweet yet flatly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is spectacular with a thicker syrupy feel up front building to a zestiness in the finish. A weener without a doubt.

Appearance - Dark ruby tea like colour much as you get in a well brewed cup of Assam. Thick foam head that really locks in the flavour very well! The head really reminded me of McEwans Champion Ale which to my mind is a cracking example of the style so this one is up there too.

Smell - Deeply fruity. Personally I was getting a lot of Raisins, prune, sweet caramel, fudge and liquorice. The armoa is best described as very complex with a lightly boozy end.

Taste - Sweet up front with an abundance of caramel/fudge and raisins. This initial sweet malty front develops into more bread and pastry notes like blueberry muffin. Finally the liquorice comes in towards the end with the bitter hop. Reasonable boozy tones ride through the whole rink but it is never over powering or out of balance!

Mouth feel - Full and creamy with a lovely finish that is perfectly warming, spicy, drying and mouth watering all at the same time. Could this be the best mouth feel I have ever come across? It might just be and I cannot justify giving it any less than the full 5 on this point.

Overall - All I can say to sum up is this is up there as one of the best I have had in the style and being an Ulster Scot I'm a big fan of this style. Well done Founders. I only wish the price tag in the UK was not so high but I guess you get what you pay for and I certainly got one hell of a good beer here!

A:Pours a dark, and slightly hazy red with a thin short lived tan head.

S: A big malt aroma with a bit of oak. Some woody, earthy notes with a little bit of raisin in the background. Nice breadcrust and toast comes through. Very little hop aroma.

T: Big, bright malt flavor with some woody earth notes... a bit of oak as well. A bit of graham cracker. Starts out sweet on the palate but finishes dry. There's a tiny bit of raisin hidden in there as well. Bitter aftertaste in the dry finish.

F: Leans more towards a fuller body. Medium carbonation.

O: I love this beer. The alcohol warms but isn't overpowering. Great balance with a nice bitterness balancing the big malt flavor. Late in the finish, you can actually pick out a nutty flavor from the malts used. Complex and flavorful. One of my favorite scotch ales.

Look: Loved the color on this one. Nice dark, clear, red amber color.

Smell: You get that scotch right up front with a little bit of hoppiness. Malty.

Taste: You get the scotch up front and little sweetness. This probably ages better it was already only a few months old but 6 months to a year and I think it would be better.

Feel: Light but not too heavy.

Overall: Decent beer. Was expecting more kinda felt like a barrel aged beer but without that POW. It still is a big beer and would love to get more of this to age it.

Rather heavy-handed on hops, this lacked the malt characteristics I usually seek in a Scotch ale. At the very least, the malt characteristics were attenuated.

Pretty dark red color with a pale off white head.

Mild smell, perfectly good and appropriate, malty.

Beautiful, rich, malty taste, hints of fruit and raisiny sweetness, but not enough to be offputting.

Moderately rich mouthfeel, very nice carbonation, enough not too much.

Very long, well-integrated finish, tastes just like the rest of the beer.

One of the most intense scotch ales out there. There is no holding back on flavour with this one and it's extremely boozy, while maintaining a smooth and creamy mouth feel.

Appearance (Look): A nice caramel/amber color. Foamy caramel head. Great appearance.

Smell: Smells very good, a strong malt, smoky and also very piney.

Taste: Super kick in the ass strong. Really good flavors. Tastes sort of like toffee. The aftertaste if what I love. Yeasty/toffee/caramel/reminds me of something sweet and buttery.

Mouth-Feel: Smooth as hell, lightly carbonated, it's just rather strong but it's a fantastic beer.

Overall: Taste was great, after taste was great/it's a real packing the punch beer, I enjoyed the experience of it.
