Serving: Bottle into Corsendonk tulip
Served: 2 July 2013

Appearance: An amazing dark red- so dark that it looks nearly black unless you hold it up to some soft light to let the red notes shine through. The red looks like a cherry-wood sort of red. Pours with a light brown, dirty colored head that slowly dissipates. Leaves some lacing.

Smell: Smells like sweeter malts. Dark and caramelly though.

Taste: Tastes kind of like a Doppelbock- sweet and caramelly, with some dark fruit notes. The sweet carameliness is probably the most notable flavor in this one. Great, full-bodied taste finishes semi-sweet. For being >8%, this beer doesn't taste or feel boozy, and drinks dangerously smooth.

Mouthfeel: Here's where this beer shines, in my opinion. The mouthfeel for this one is incredible- it's quite minimally carbonated, and the bubbles feel small on the palate, giving it a thicker, creamier feeling on the tongue. It is absolutely magnificent for this beer, and really helps showcase the taste.

Overall: A great beer, and one that I would gladly get again. I wasn't the biggest fan of the caramel tasting darker malts when I first got into craft beer, but it is definitely growing on me, thanks to beers like this. Would certainly recommend.

Enjoyed out of a 12 oz brown bottle and poured into a large snifter glass. No identifiable dates for bottling or freshness. I've had this one in my fridge for close to 6 months, so the hop characteristics should be pretty faint.

Appearance - Aggressive pour yields a rich chestnut brown body with deep ruby highlights topped with a thin rosy-tan colored head. Dissipates quickly, leaving a tiny pinstripe around the edge and wisps on the surface of the beer.

Smell - Dark dried fruits and brown sugar. An echo of roasty notes gives way to characteristics of leather and intertwined esters

Taste - Madeira and port, but more like a tea, so not as rich. Some malty sweetness with notes of caramel and semisweet chocolate. Some spicy cinnamon that reminds me of Malbec. Finish is bittersweet.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with minimal carbonation. Slick and smooth with a drying finish.

Overall a great version of the style. Mostly sweet, but it's done in a way that is clean and balanced. It would be entirely too easy to drink more than one of these. Doubt I'd buy a sixer of this style, but this one would certainly tempt me.
