What more can you say? This could be considered "A freaking good beer"! A beautiful deep amber color. Small 1/4" head that dissipates rather quickly. Pretty much a perfect balance between malt/hops. Just the right amount of carbonation. One of my top 5 all time favorites! The only downside to this beer is that I don't live closer to the brewery and its Utopian taps.

A: Dark ruby red/brown, small head.

S: Sweet smells of vanilla/caramel, and malt.

T: Tastes pretty much as it smells. Sweet, with hints of spice and booze towards the end.

M: Medium bodied, good carbonation for the style.

O: There's a reason this is one of Founders' mainstays. Such a great example of the style. If I close my eyes and pretend, I can taste Backwoods.

Not your most educated beer drinker in terms of the lingo...however I bought my first six of this beer looking for a cheaper option to my favorite. with the first six i thought i had found it, great taste going down with a bit of a warming feel.

bought a second six a couple weeks later and was feeling pretty good about my selection. a few weeks later i stepped up and bought the case of dirty bastard....in the end it is a good beer, but i surprisingly started feeling as though the ending taste was that of ear wax (sorry, as an uneducated beer lingo guy....best i could come up with.)

i do like the beer on occasion, but i just can't get over the ending flavor. this beer smells and looks great as it is unfiltered (which i love). the ABV content is awesome if you drink only a couple per sitting as i do....maybe there is something wrong with my pallet as it is not my favorite, however i will give it a break and definetly try it again down the road as it is still on my list of top fives. i will pay the extra for the Skull Splitter for now...still looking

12oz bottle into a tulip.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber with barely a half finger head. No head retention and just a thin ring is left around the top of the beer.

Aroma of dark caramel, brown sugar, and molasses. A little bit of roasted malt and a touch of smoke, but caramel really dominates.

The flavor is very much like the aroma. Tons of caramel and molasses with some yeasty fruit flavors coming through as well. I don't really pick up on much smoke but there is a nice roast underneath that barely peeks its head out. Bitterness is quite light with sweet malt taking hold throughout. Finish is on the sticky side.

Overall, I found this beer to be a little bit one dimensional. The caramel maltiness is excellent but I would've liked a little more complexity. The sweetness is a little much for me as well. Backwoods Bastard is ten times better than the Dirty.

Brown color with a thin brownish head with short retention.
Aroma of raisins, cherries, wood with a strong malt presence.
Flavor in harmony with aroma. Very malty flavor but not tiresome, hints of raisin and dark fruits.
Full body with low carbonation.
Aftertaste is bitter with a hoppy twist.
Excellent Scotch Ale, great even who does not dig the style. Got balance, character and lots of flavors.
