A: deep ruby brown with tan head foam that vanishes quickly

S: malt, caramel, smoke

T: roasty smoke and peaty flavors, caramel malt and whiskey

M: creamy, sweetness abates and dryness remains

O: a classic scotch ale - not overwhelmingly caramelly or sweet, nicely smoked and dried - great mouthfeel

Bottled 05/09/12

A: Pours a dark ruby red color with a fingers worth of head

S: Very malty, with notes of smoke, caramel, cherrywood, and a light nuttiness

T: Follows the nose, not overly sweet given the huge amount of malts. Starts off with cherrywood, caramel, light smoke and a nice nuttiness that adds a salty note as well

M: Medium-full bodied with low-moderate carbonation. Smooth

O: This beer has all the great elements of a scotch style ale, with the perfect amount of smoke and maltiness without being too sweet. A nice sipper at 8.5%, too

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 05/15/12.

A: Pours a dark copper brown that appears ruby in the light. 1 finger yellowish white head. A little bit of visible carbonation. Head remains as an 1/8 inch for most of the glass.

S: Roasty, carmely dominate the forefront. Pleasant dark fruits, and just a hint of hop. A slight chocolate as well.

T: Pretty well balanced scotch ale. Has the malt dominate beginning, doesn't get overly sweet and finishes with some bitter hop. Focuses on more of that roasty taste.

M: Medium bodied with decent carbonation. Pretty easy drinking. Has a lingering roasted malt after taste.

Overall another staple in the Founders lineup. Happy I can finally get it in NY. Fairly versatile for a strong dark beer.

A-pours a deep red amber with a two finger widths head with good retention
S-caramel and a bit of sweet malt, low hop aroma
T-lots of caramel and roasted malt, hops provide a nice bitterness to balance the sweetness
M-medium bodied
O-awesome beer. Great flavor and looks fantastic.

A- Dark brown/amber/red. Can't see through in the least. Nice head and lacing.

S- Raisins, fig, plum, caramel, and an earthy, spicy, hop-like aroma. Little bit of dank way in the back.

T- There's a lot going on. Each sip is a little different and the flavors change rather dramatically as it warms. Caramel, raisin, fig, in the beginning. There seems to be a nice hop presence as well. At various times, I picked up some citrus, dank, light pine and earthy spice. Some nice bready hints in there, too. My favorite aspect of this beer was a wonderful dark chocolate flavor in the finish, which completely pulled you away from the flavors that led you there. Super subtle booze and easy burn in the malty aftertaste.

M- Thicker side of medium with carbonation that was just right. Smooth and lightly drying with a light malty, spicy aftertaste.

O- Founders is the king of malts, period. The taste of this beer was all over the map. Each flavor beautifully balanced with the others. I will definitely be having again.

Pours into the glass a slightly cloudy dark reddish brown color without much of a head. The smell is one for the maltheads. Caramel and brown sugar coated cherries and raisins mixed with a hint of smoke and a touch of ethanol. The flavor is rich and malty with just enough smoke and burnt to keep it from being cloying. Lots of caramel and dark fruits abound. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet bubbly mouthfeel. I've had this before and I'm surprised I hadn't rated it yet. Great brew, now distribute to NH already!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Harriet tulip.

Dark red body, clear with ruby highlights and a thin active beige collar. Fine spotty lacing, fast running tears.

Deep caramel, toasted malt, peat, and fruit in the nose.

Faintly smoky palate entry with stone fruit and toasted malt on the palate. Dry, grain and alcohol-laden finish.

Slick, medium-bodied, creamy, warming mouth-feel.

A passable, well crafted example of the style...but lacking in depth.
