Pours a muddy caramel/chocolate brown. Minimal head, no retention or lacing.

A sweet and malty nose, with notes of gingerbread.

Major malts. Primarily Brown sugar, some caramel, a little yeast. Some dark fruits.

Bittering finish, fairly smoothe throughout. Decent, but not up to the standards of other Founder's stuff I've had, or other Scotch Ales I've had. Check it, but don't rush out to get it.

12 oz bottle at fridge temp

Pours a deep pretty much opaque red color, somewhat brown. Light tan head that fades to a lasting ring, spotty lace. Some nice tight head is revived from a quick swirl.

Sweet malt with some fruity esters. Earthy aromas with some brown sugar, molasses and toffee. Sweet fruity esters most noticeable however.

A bit more complexity in the taste. Lots of sweet malt and not so much fruity esters as the aroma. Caramel, toffee, molasses, some light brown sugar, plum and grape like dark fruits and dark breads. Just a booziness makes for a nice backbone. Maybe even hints of cocoa.

Kind of a thicker medium to heavy in body, appropriate carbonation.

A pretty solid scotch ale, but it's definatly not one of my favorite styles. But it's an amazing beer barrel aged, crazy how much better it makes it.

Ba Review #219

This was in a mixed case picked up at North York Beverage in York, PA - Around $45.00.

Look: Poured a dark murky brown color with some slight tinges of copper around the edges. The head was a thin coating of light tan bubbles. Couldn’t detect the carbonation level through the deep haze. Head lacing started forming immediately.

Smell: Some semi-sweet vanilla upfront. Brown sugar and molasses notes were in the background. The aroma had a heavy quality that suggested a very big beer.

Taste: First up was a sweet brown sugar followed by an earthy roasted malt. Not much in the way of smokiness. The finish was a bitterness that faded into a semi-sweet dark fruit that transitioned into the finish.

This beer hit me like an Oskar Blues Old Chub (see review #38) without the Whiskey burn. Not bad.
