Lightly chilled 12 oz. bottle into a shaker pint. Bottling date 8.3.12.

Look- Deep amber verging on brown, two fingers of beige foam. OK retention, head clings to the glass but leaves fairly little lace.

Smell- Oaky-roasty-toffee with a sweet aroma that reminds me of artificial blue raspberry or some sort of strawberry-lemon-melon combination. Pleasant, but almost lemonade-like sweetness is too much for me.

Taste- Still fairly sweet, but now the same intriguing melange of nutty-graham cracker malt, toffee, and mild woody smoke really come out. Light herbal bittering and a bit of alcohol on the back end, but the booze comes off as hearty rather than unpleasant due to a lingering vanilla/pecan pie flavor. Good, but the sweetness is too much by the end of the glass.

Mouthfeel- Medium-full feel, medium carbonation. Sluggish, dense but not quite syrupy feel. Would be creamy if the carbonation was softer. One is enough, but I wouldn't pass on another if it was offered. Substantial.

Overall- I like it, but I probably wouldn't get it regularly; it's simply too sweet. Otherwise quite nice, although definitely a winter warmer.

Thanks, Msquared2!! Like all of the Founders, another long time want.

Appearance. Pors a rusty-red witha a half finger of khaki head.

Smell. Caramel, fresh lumber and butterscotch, a little orange juice and spice.

Taste. Sweet caramel, cocoa powder and a bit of vanilla, butterscotch and plums. A little bitterness like wood, but not exactly. A bit of smoke too.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall. Interesting and quite big. I haven't had many of this style, but certainly haven't had one like this. Interesting beer for sure.

Appearance: Dark nut brown with a tan half finger head.

Aroma: Like an apple caramelizing on a stovetop. Lots of caramel malts in there. A smell you can almost taste.

Taste: Really takes over your palate with roasted caramel and a little bit of a boozy taste around the edges. Finishes smooth but leaves a surprisingly bitter aftertaste on your tongue. A little bit of red apple peel mixed in with the alcohol taste and a hint of some apple pie spice lingering in the background. No hop presence that I'm aware of. The alcohol has a nice warming effect as it goes down.

Mouthfeel: It's definitely a thick beer. Also slightly more effervescent than I expected. Even though it is so full bodied, it still drinks easily enough.

Final Thoughts: This beer accomplishes the main goal of being a Scotch Ale and also delivers a robust palate with a lot to like about it. Although I can't see myself opting for a six pack of this, it is a nice treat in small doses.
