Sitting at the Whole Foods in Sauganash. Served in a pint glass with an inch and a half of creamy, cafe latte colored head. Smells of butter and malt, pleasant. Not much hops. Tastes of butter again, then the hops. Bitterness, not a lot of citrus. Feels silky on the tongue, big in the mouth. Overall, I like this beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass (shoot me, i don't own a thistle glass). The brew pours a dark clear brownish color with copperishish highlights. The head is a massive 2+ fingers that are light carmel color and it deflates fast to leave a layer atop the beer. A nice slippery lacing consumes the glass as the beer is quaffed.

The aroma is of carmel, malts, and a touch of alcohol.

The flavor is very forward carmel and alcohol with no sign of any bitterness.

Sweetness is medium-high, perhaps being forward by a lowish attenuation.

Mouth feel is medium - heavy with it being just on the verge of being cloying. This is probably pretty close to a very good rendition of this style which brings up the real question. Do you judge a brew by ones personal preference or how close it is to hitting the mark as the style is outlined.

For me, it misses the mark as an enjoyable drinker, but as far as style goes, it's probably an A brew. I'll go with the latter and say that it is pretty spot on as far as style description goes.

Pours a dark brown, almost toffee-coloured. A finger-width of off-white head. Moderate lacing.

Smell contains toffee, bready malt, plum, raisin, and a bit of booze. Nice but not very strong.

Taste is similar to the nose. Toffee, raisin, burnt brown sugar, a bit of bread. Fairly bitter, particularly in the finish.

Full bodied, moderate carbonation made up of small bubbles. Chewy. Dries out the mouth a bit.

Overall, quite good. Definitely a solid scotch ale.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance - a nice rusty red color which formed a foaming head which lingered ~ 1 min after pouring.

Smell - Not a very potent odor. Smells of alcohol a bit with a little bit of fruit possibly, but not very strong at all.

Taste - An upfront bitterness that seems to persist. while not heavily present at first, begin to get the alcohol taste a bit later.

Mouthfeel - A nice level of carbonation with an average body.

Overall - Not a bad beer, but not what it is lived up for or costs. Would not buy on any regularity and would choose other Founders beers over this.

Friend of mine just forced me to take 4 bottles of this home tonight, seems he didn't like it. These are most likely pushing a year so this should be interesting as i'd never age this beer.

The pour is a thick, cloudy, and yeast filled reddish color. Not much head but age will do that.

This smells like a candy of sorts. Lots of spiced apples, caramel, molasses, with maybe hints of plums and raisins.

The taste is certainly of apples, caramel, and spices left from the hops. The opening however is a touch soft and watery.

Medium body without much carbonation.

An interesting and decent beer, though I'm not sure that it is even remotely with the style. This is certainly a very interesting take on it and it isn't bad by any means.

A: Sweet malt and caramel. A light touch of toffee and butterscotch. No hops.
A: Deep mahogany with a sparing fleeting head. Clear where apparent.
F: Bitter up front, followed by chewy sweetness. Caramel is very apparent, along with some Maillard notes of melanoidin and kettle caramelization: plums, raisins. Earthy notes I might attribute to yeasty phenolics. A balanced finish with bitterness most evident.
M: Full bodied and medium to low carbonation. No astringency. Creamy chewy textured. Finish dries with high bitterness perception that lingers well beyond and into the next patient sip
Overall: This beer more closely resembles an amber/west coast red if I were left to guess. Too much bitterness for a beer brewed in the notoriously hop-stingy Scottish style. My serving was too cold, which may make for an unfair assessment. I understand the relationship between coldness and the maintenance of many tap handles. Bitterness may be accentuated under these circumstances however. Good beer nonetheless. I'd like to try this from a bottle, and will next chance I get.
