A: Deep dark cloudy mahogany that pours to less then a fingers worth of head that dissipates to blotchy clouds of lace that cover in patches and all around the rim.

S: Very aromatic. Very nice sweet malt flavors. Dark fruit esters mixed with a light bready yeastyness. When swirled, it smells like a nice berry fruit smoothie.

T: Nice dark fruit flavors. Date, plums and figs. Some nice sweet caramel flavoring and sweet and toasted malts at the same time. Alcohol flavor is distinct and bitterness is kept to a minimum. Very nice.

M: Light carbonation, flavors are crisp and distinct and the high ABV leaves a dry feeling that isn't unpleasant.

O: Very nice malty brew with complex sweetness and minimal bitterness. Very enjoyable.

Aroma: Dark malt and some sweet fruity esters. Munich malt, roasted barley, sweet grains. Fruit smells like apricot. Mildly worty. Crisp and clean overall. Mild molasses and chocolate.

Appearance: Depp red. Looks clear when held up to a light. Lots of rising bubbles. Head is small and creamy. Hazelnut in color, light tan. Good retention and lacing.

Taste: Strong dark fruity esters. Plum, some apple. Sweet and bitter malt. Some spicy clove and black pepper. Munich malt, barley, and some dry roasted malted. Sweet caramel. Moderate bitterness. A bit nutty, cashews. Hops are bitter and piney (50 IBU's on the label).

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. Smooth, frothy mild carbonation. Feels slick in the mouth. Finishes quite dry.

Overall: Another solid brew from Founders. Full of flavor yet never harsh. Can even be enjoyed for breakfast, which this one was.

I will now go on record by saying if “Bastard’s” in the name, I am going to enjoy whatever is in the bottle! Founder’s Dirty Bastard is an outstanding ale that has earned a place in my inventory for the foreseeable future! Enjoyed straight from the bottle, chilled to approximately 42 degrees, the taste is extremely satisfying, not as harsh as the 8.5% ABV would imply! The smell is sweet with a definite twinge to it, reminiscent of Barley wine style ale! Being that this is the first Scotch style ale I’ve sampled, if this represents the genre, I do not have anything to compare it too, but if it does, it now ranks among my favorites!

A- `Pours a rich, mahogany brown with a ton of rich cherry highlights. A thick, 2 1/2 finger light brown head floats for quite some time before letting go and leaving a ton of lacing sticking all over the glass.

S- Charred wood, notes of burnt molasses, caramel, dark brown sugar, roasted pecans, fairly mild notes of alcohol, and notes of dried fruit.

T- Dried figs, cherries, burnt sugar, a touch of coffee bitterness, smokey wood, some caramel and hints of hops and spice. Not really as deep and rich as I was hoping for.

M- Fairly thin, not much carbonation. You really pick up the alcohol because of the lack of feel. Nice flavors, but not much going on here.

O- Looks better than it tastes. Flavors and smells not nearly as lively and rich as I was hoping for. Certainly not bad, but there are much better scotch ales out there.

A: Pours a wonderful copper colour with a khaki head with hints of red. Head dissipates quickly, but leaves a nice lacing.

S: Caramel, cherries, brown sugar, tea. Beautiful

T: Hoppier than I would have expected. Not hoppy, just more hop presence than I would have expected from the style or the aroma. Again, caramel, cherries, brown sugar, and tea are all present, with the tannicity and the hops working to balance out the sweetness nicely. Faint butterscotch makes its presence known. Just the slightest hint of smokiness comes through as the beer warms. A sweet sipper with a nice zing to it to keep it from being too cloying or heavy. There's a reason this is my favourite example of one of my favourite styles!

M: Just right. Full bodied without being sludgy. Carbonation and hops serve to keep it from feeling too syrupy, but without being overdone.

O: I. Love. This. Beer! Perfect for one of the last chilly rainy days before Summer.

12oz bottle, into a snifter

Dark amber with virtually no head. Virtually no lacing. Head dissipated quickly.

Smells like scotch, molasses, caramel.

Taste left a bit to be desired. I didn't think the flavors were all that well balanced, nor did I think the alcohol was well hidden. Tastes of molasses, figs, raisins and alcohol.

The mouth feel was heavy and it lacked carbonation, but from what I can gather, it fits the style very well. It reminded me of syrup it was so thick, would be a great beverage in this regard if it were the middle of winter, not when it was 95 degrees on my porch when drinking it.

This beer will warm you up, but so far it has been of my least favorite scotch ales. Founders does a great job with every beer, and this beer wasn't bad, but I felt it was a bit below average for the style. I would probably still drink it again and maybe even buy it again. It's a sipper, certainly not going to drink more than 2 of these in a given night. I gave it lower scores due to the fact that I have found several other scotch ales I enjoyed as much or more for a lower price.
