12oz. bottle poured into a straight sided pint glass.

A- a dark amber with heavy ruby highlights. A minimal khaki head that dissipates quickly.

S- Mostly malts and dark fruits like prunes and dried cranberries. A hint of alcohol.

T- A nice thick malty sweetness gives way to the dark fruits of prunes and raisins. Alcohol heats a bit, and a slight bitterness balances the sweetness/dark fruits. This is seriously well crafted.

M- A nice rich mouthfeel with amble carbonation to clean the palette for the next sip. A hint of hops dry just slightly for the next sip.

O- I can't drink a lot of this style of beer, but this is certainly one of the best takes on the style that I've had. Certainly something everyone should at least try.

12oz bottle into an oversized wine glass

Ap- pours a dark amber color with the slightest bit of red tint. Pretty much completely opaque. Not ver much head on the pour and just the slightest bit sticks to the edge of the glass.

Ar- First I smell roasted malts and alcohol. For 8.5% the alcohol seems almost overpowering. Caramel and Scotch smells too.

T- Roasty malts are prevalent in this one. They hit first followed by some caramel flavors and a hint of alcohol. Much less alcohol flavor than the nose suggested. A bit of sweetness too. Has the teeniest amount of hop flavor at the very end.

M- Good carbonation for the style, medium bodied, a little sticky. The alcohol warms the mouth just a bit on the hold.

O- Solid beer from Founder. I haven't had many Wee Heavies so not a lot to compare too but solid nonetheless.

Reviewed from notes. Originally had on tap, reviewed here from bottle notes. Pours a rich dark amber into dimpled mug with little head presence what so ever. Smells of malt, alcohol and dark fruits like plum and raisin. A rich, hearty mouthfeel of maltiness and alcohol but with the slight sweetness of dark fruits. A very good and balanced Scotch Ale without being too sweet or rich with the 8.5% abv very much in the mix, but not overly so, providing a nice warming effect. I enjoyed this more from the bottle than the 1st time, which was on tap.

Another great beer from Founders. This is a perfect winter beer, not only is it very drinkable, but it's high in alcohol and has a nice warming quality.

The aroma has a nice scotch and malt smell while, the taste is much the same. There is a lot of malt taste without it being overwhelming, it has a creamy texture, there is a distinct taste of hops in the background and it finishes with a hint of bitterness. Very pleased with this.

Dark, root beer brown beer with reddish highlights on the edges of the glass. Hazy, with a decent tan head that hangs around. Good lacing.

Spicy bread aroma, like pumpernickel. Earthy hops float up and start tickling the nose followed by a musty funk that I can't put my finger on. Like freshly turned earth. Then a candy like sweetness comes through, sweet malt but slightly dark and fruity.

Stiff bitterness up front quickly subsides then a spicy malt flavor takes over. Heavy earthen hops hold down the malt sweetness as flavors of rye bread emerge. Dark fruit, or raisin, starts to emerge.

Finish is clean, hop bitterness cleans up the spicy malt and washes out the palate. Heavy body but not sticky.

There is a musty earthiness to this beer that I find quite intriguing. It adds a dimension that transcends a malt-heavy, bitter scotch ale. It's like eating a thick slice of rye bread with raisins in a cave. I'm not sure if that sounds appetizing but it was truly delicious.
