A: Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. Deep garnet in color, with a rich, 1-finger ecru head. Head dissipates into a steady ring, with a trace of lacing.

S: Robust, tangy, and malty on the nose. Aromas of salty caramel, licorice, a touch of orange, burnt bread crust. A very rich and appealing nose, this has all of the hallmarks one would expect of a top-quality Scotch Ale.

T: Smooth, malty, with a touch of booziness, this beer is full-flavored and delightfully refreshing. Burnt malts start off on the tongue, and caramel, chocolate, and coffee fill in the middle with a toasted (burnt) bread finish. The malts are pronounced, but none-too-sweet, tempered by a mild hopping and ample aging to mellow the sugars into hooch. This adds to the slightly hot flavor, but at 8.5% abv, it's surprisingly smooth.

M: Smooth is the word of the day for this beer, as it feels silky and supple in the mouth. Lighter than one would expect from such a dark beer, and with just the right amount of body so that you don't run away from it after one. Great balance, and nice consistency.

O: One of the most "sessionable" scotch ales I've had, even though at 8.5% it'll get you into trouble quickly. It's delicious, goes down easy, and is all-around a pleasure to drink. I think I'll have another...

I'll give this beer 4's all around. For a Scott Ale/Wee Heavy, this beer is great. I drank this right after having an IPA brew, so the first thing I noticed was the strong malt presence and caramel. Great mouthfeel and perfect carbonation. If you like a beer that's sweet, malty, and heavy, Dirty Bastard is a must try.

12oz bottle, pours a deep brown with reddish tinges, thinner foamy tan head holds decent retention and leaves a little lacing on the glass. Aromas are earthy peat, malty, brown sugar, caramel, raisin, toffee, booze. Tastes are earth, peat, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, faint chocolate as it warms, a little bit of spice from the hops. Mouth-feel is smooth and creamy while being medium bodied. Overall, always a favorite of mine for the style. Well balanced with good complexity.
