Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Slightly hazy, light brown color with a partial residue of loose light beige bubbles. Light scattered lacing remains on the glass.

S: Complimentary brown malt, toasted hazelnuts, and surprisingly fresh coffee are seamlessly joined in the nose. Intensity is very appropriate--resonant but not overpowering or cloying. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins dry, with mild malt that is very well-toasted. Coffee-derived depth develops after a few beats, progressing through the middle in a focused and clean fashion. Some acidity develops during the latter half of the profile, revving up when flavors should be easing into the finish. Lingering flavors represent all of those encountered thus far, with the added influence of a green-herbaceous thread and some associated. No alcohol is detected.

M: Medium viscosity, acidic on the palate late, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This strong brown ale yields some traditional and attractive qualities, but it isn't quite able to reach the desired comfort level of what a high-gravity beer ideally should. There is nothing about it that suggests to the drinker to sip and savor.

2012 Vintage

A - Pours a dark chestnut brown color with a generously sticky, thick head, very viscous when the glass is swirled.

S - Predominantly hazelnut aroma, underneath is bitter dark chocolate and a hint of mocha cream.

T - Similar to the nose but with alcohol presence and light warming on the way down. The hazelnut is toned down (the hefty nose was screaming the same on the palate...not so much). Light hazelnut, mocha/coffee, semi-creamy, nutty, and sweet dark chocolate.

M - Thin medium body to medium body and thin on the finish, dry finish, and coats the mouth with nutty, dark chocolate.

O - Not a fan of brown ales but this is a good one.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Firestone Walker tasting glass.

A: Clear chestnut. Light head. Gorgeous.

S: Oh my goodness, it smells amazing. Rich coffee, hint of nuttiness, but so much coffee. Hint of dry bitterness. (Reminiscent of Wild Heaven Ode To Mercy.)

T/M/O: Rich, sweet, and Frangelico-y. Hazelnut liquer. Strong and chocolatey. The coffee is still present. This is incredible. It may be slightly faded, but still hugely flavorful. The finish is dry and nutty and lingering and reminiscent of almonds and coffee grounds. Hint of watery softness belied by the surprising 9% ABV. Drinkable and pleasant. Highly recommended. I'm really happy to have had an opportunity to sample this.

A: Pours clear, but opaque brown with a thin, off-white ring of head.

S: Hazelnut, sweet hazelnut is the primary scent, along with some nutty malty notes in the nose.

T: Nutty malts, hazelnut, some lemony notes, some other light fruits.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Pretty good, one of the better brown ales out there.
