Nice beer from Founders. Average looking pour with a fluffy white foam. Moderate lacing throughout consumption. It holds a really great nose with coffee, hazelnut, vanilla, burnt sugar, and a bit of booze. I thought it was delightful.

The taste is much the same as the nose, dominant by the hazelnut coffee. It's nicely sweet and reminds you that you're drinking beer. It had a fairly light mouthfeel but a strong sugary finish that I didn't particularly care for.

Overall, it was a good beer but at $15, it didn't blow me away. Not the best out of the backstage series but I'll continue to buy the backstage beers as I haven't been truly disappointed yet.

Pours an opaque, dark brown with copper overtones and very slight ruby highlights here and there. Low carbonation on the pour yields nearly no head, just a small, off-white ring that clings to the circumference of the glass. Aroma is heavy hazelnut coffee; creamy, sweet, and sugary with more faint hints of cocoa and roasted malt. It tastes almost exactly like you'd expect from the nose - iced hazelnut coffee, loaded with sweet cream and sugar. Very dense and full of hazelnut flavor, as well as a lingering cocoa powder essence that gets stronger with time. As the beer warms up, the bittersweet coffee ground flavors start to come out, but nevertheless, it is the sweetness that dominates here. Heavy hazelnut and roasted malt aftertaste, very little (if any) hop profile to be found in this one. Medium body, maybe even a little on the thin side, and a bit thinner than anticipated. Could have used a bit more carbonation as well.

Overall, not disappointed like others said I would be. Then again, I love hazelnut coffee. And that's what they were out to achieve, right? It doesn't taste much like a beer, but it certainly has a distinguishable and fairly scrumptious taste, albeit maybe a bit too sweet to enjoy on a regular basis (aside from the fact that it's hard to get your hands on anyway). Can definitely say I was pleasantly surprised, and far from being let down. I'd have this again if it weren't for the high price tag and low availability.

I am not a fan of hazelnut, but like Founders, so I thought I'd give this a try. In a pint glass the beer was a medium brown color with a tan head. There was a little bit of lace

Hazelnut aroma. Coffee with cream. A little bit of caramel.

The hazelnut was even more on display in the taste. Still there was the coffee with cream and the caramel.

I thought the flavors worked well together, and actually enjoyed the beer.

A - Pours clear mahogany with one and a half fingers of creamy, persistent tan head. Leaves small spots of lacing throughout.

S - Huge hazelnut coffee nose. Really don't get much else, but it smells delicious. Maybe just a hint of alcohol and brown sugar.

T - Taste has more elements than the smell, and is more clearly a brown ale, though hazelnut coffee still dominates. More roasted malt with a bit of char, some slightly sweet and bready malts. More complex, but not quite as enjoyable as the smell.

M - After it warms up a bit, the mouthfeel has a nice creaminess to it, along with some bitter roastiness.

O - This is a very tasty imperial brown ale. Being part of the Founders Backstage series may raise some expectations that this doesn't quite live up to, but still a good and interesting beer.

22oz bottle at a recent tasting, reviewed from notes.

So here's the thing about this beer. If you like sweet hazelnut, you're laughing. If not, you are out of luck. Simple as that. Let's press on.

Pours a nice chestnut hue, a bit hazy, with a sturdy crown of foam that holds its own quite well.

This brew has an unmistakable nose of sweet hazelnut, coffee and chocolate. In fact, I would go so far to say as this brew smells like a fresh batch of hazelnut roasted coffee. For me, this is a blessing, but for a few others at the tasting, this was a bit of a curse.

Taste is quite similar - vanilla, hazelnut coffee, with sweet brown sugar and a roasted malt. Cream, caramel and other sweet goodies in the mix. A very tasty brown, but the sweetness does get to you after a while. Medium to thicker bodied, very drinkable.

I liked this brew a great deal because I'm a sucker for hazelnut anything. Would be an excellent after dinner brew to be sure.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Robust reddish-brown with thick light tan head and some lacing rings. Mostly dies down after a few.

Smell: Smells like flavored coffee, which makes me a little worried about the taste. Nevertheless, it smells great, with coffee and hazelnut. Sweet and nutty.

Taste: Tastes like Hazelnut Coffee. Big surprise. Nutty, roasty, and with a lingering, light bitterness (not sure if from the roast, coffee, nuttiness or hops). There is a very light sweetness at the finish as well, but not getting the artificial sweetener taste that some are complaining about. Actually the bitterness, while mild, is strangely astringent.

Feel: Lighter body than expected and maybe a little low in carbonation. Mostly dry finish. Smooth, but just oddly thin.

Overall: Not sure what to think here. It is not the pure deliciousness that I usually get from Founders, but it is also not the saccharine mess that some have described it as. Flavors are just a little one dimensional, and a little rough around the edges.
