750ml bottle poured into a large snifter.

A: Deep brown on the pour with burnt sienna highlights. Good clarity. The sand colored head settles pretty quickly, and even swirling of the glass won't revive it. Small, spotty lacing.

S: Huge aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It's uncanny, actually. This smells just like a freshly brewed cup of hazelnut coffee. Fruity notes of raspberry underneath. Toast with jam. Hazelnut chocolate. Slightly woody. A highly aromatic and memorable nose.

T: The dominant coffee taste comes as no surprise. Freshly brewed hazelnut coffee with rich earthy and nutty tastes. Light acidity. Creamy hazelnut chocolate. Hints of underlying raspberry fruitiness, sharp hop interjection reminiscent of orange marmalade. Strong, eternal finish of rich hazelnut coffee.

M: Thick body, full, rich, and creamy. Chewy. Slight scrubbing carbonation. Well-hidden alcohol warmth. Sinfully smooth. A luscious, decadent, and dessert-like mouthfeel.

O: Coffee, coffee, coffee. A fairly straightforward beer by Founder's standards, but they do it damn well. The coffee flavors are bold, rich, and authentic. The body/mouthfeel supports the strong flavors at work and even adds to the decadence. A stellar brew, and one of the most memorable coffee beers I've ever had.

2012 Vintage

A - Pours a dark chestnut brown color with a generously sticky, thick head, very viscous when the glass is swirled.

S - Predominantly hazelnut aroma, underneath is bitter dark chocolate and a hint of mocha cream.

T - Similar to the nose but with alcohol presence and light warming on the way down. The hazelnut is toned down (the hefty nose was screaming the same on the palate...not so much). Light hazelnut, mocha/coffee, semi-creamy, nutty, and sweet dark chocolate.

M - Thin medium body to medium body and thin on the finish, dry finish, and coats the mouth with nutty, dark chocolate.

O - Not a fan of brown ales but this is a good one.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Firestone Walker tasting glass.

A: Clear chestnut. Light head. Gorgeous.

S: Oh my goodness, it smells amazing. Rich coffee, hint of nuttiness, but so much coffee. Hint of dry bitterness. (Reminiscent of Wild Heaven Ode To Mercy.)

T/M/O: Rich, sweet, and Frangelico-y. Hazelnut liquer. Strong and chocolatey. The coffee is still present. This is incredible. It may be slightly faded, but still hugely flavorful. The finish is dry and nutty and lingering and reminiscent of almonds and coffee grounds. Hint of watery softness belied by the surprising 9% ABV. Drinkable and pleasant. Highly recommended. I'm really happy to have had an opportunity to sample this.

A: Pours clear, but opaque brown with a thin, off-white ring of head.

S: Hazelnut, sweet hazelnut is the primary scent, along with some nutty malty notes in the nose.

T: Nutty malts, hazelnut, some lemony notes, some other light fruits.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Pretty good, one of the better brown ales out there.
