Poured from a 22oz bottle into a large snifter.

A: Pours a cloudy darker brown with a tiny 1/2finger off white head. Minimal lacing and retention.

S: Smells of coffee, toffee, caramel, hazelnut and maybe some vanilla.

T: Hazelnut! Some caramel and toffee in the middle and finishs with an almost coffee bitterness. A tiny bit of alcohol burn as it travels down.

M: Medium body and carbonation.

O: While I thoroughly enjoy the flavors in this one, they overpower everything else and in some cases, not in a good way. One of the let downs for me is that it is artificially flavored. (IMO, that's not part of the craft beer scene) IMO, I would prefer a strong brown ale with all the hazelnut/coffee/toffee taking a backseat but still very present.

A - Poured out a clear, brown color with a one-finger, tan head of foam. It left some sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - Smelled of hazelnut, coffee, caramel and toffee.

T - The hazelnut flavor is very strong and tasty. Sweet with caramel notes. Mild coffee-like bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - Great tasting beer although I feel in has to be shared. After a while all that hazelnut sweetness was simply too much.

A- pouts a deep copper amber brown with ruby highlights. Average pour produces a finger and a half of light khaki head. Solid retention.

S- Aroma starts out with a big hazelnut coffee creamer aroma with a light roast coffee note in the background. Toffee, toasty bread and molasses touch on the finish.

T- Holy hazelnut intensity hits the palate at first with a touch of light roast coffee in the back end. Malt has a nice presence with characteristics of toasty bread, toffee and caramel. A touch of booze and a lingering nutty hazelnut.

MF- rich incredibly smooth almost creamy mouthfeel with a medium body. Even soft carbonation.

D- ok drinkability.

Overall a great tasting beer just really intense hazelnut. Couldn't do more than a glass at a time.

Bottle into imperial nonic.

Looks thin... Even for a brown ale. Almost murky-looking coppery orange brown color with a small tan head. Weak retention. Hardly any spotty lacing.

Smells of hazlenut choclate and coffee. Smells very sweet.

The flavor starts sweet, is sweet in the middle, and even sweeter at the backend. Notes of chocolate, hazlenut, coffee, and a surprising amount of booziness.
At least this thing wasn't aged in those god-awful maple barrels-- that would make this hung ENTIRELY undrinkable.
As it is, I can't say I find it to be bad (I will admit I kind of wanted to not like this), but it is highly one dimensional, and way too boozy for a brown ale.
This is one of those beers I look at in the same way as fruit beers-- it is good for what it is... Not mind blowing. Not worth going crazy over-- but as for a one-trick-pony, this does it's little trick prett well... It just isn't good enough that I'd want to see it multiple times.

The body is thin. Coffee-like bitterness on the finish.

Overall-- meh. I've had better, I've had worse. I wouldn't punch my wife in the face for another bottle.

A: Nice mahogany color with a small off white head that dies off quick. Spotty lacing at best.

S: Coffee and hazelnuts for sure. Not roasted coffee, but almost stale coffee with some sweetener in it. Some vanilla. Not the best smelling for me at all. Smells a little too fake.

T: Sweet hazelnuts and artificial coffee flavoring. Not overly sweet at all, but lots of hazelnut flavor. The flavors seem like they could go well together, but I can't get over the artificial taste of the hazelnut coffee. Seems like there is a pretty decent brown ale underneath all this. Short finish.

M: Medium to lighter body. Average carbonation.

O: Drinkability isn't the best. ABV is hidden well, seems like this should be like 6-7%. I can see what they are going for, but this is pretty much a miss for me. Can't get over all the artificial flavors in this. First Founders beer that I have not been a big fan of. Can't win them all.

Nose: Straight hazelnuts! Vanilla extract, coffee roast, caramel, more hazelnut, slight chocolate

Taste: Hazelnut extract, light coffee but not much else going on in terms of flavor.

Mouthfeel: Thin, medium carbonation, light body.

Overall: Not a bad entry for the Backstage Series, albeit a weaker candidate than Better Half.

750 bottle served in a snifter.

pours a dark brown tone while yielding a finger and a half of frothy beige head; modest retention and lacing. nose is fantastic, offering tons of rich hazenut notes coupled with coffee and a hint of vanilla. very appealing, especially for a brown ale.

flavor delivers on the promise of the aroma with lots of hazelnut and coffee, but doesn't move in too many other directions from there. very tasty but no real wow factor... a bit thin with respect to mouthfeel; average carbonation.

overall i'm enjoying this one a lot; very nice brown ale. that said, doesn't exactly bedazzle the way you might hope/expect of a $15 one-off (from founders, no less). still, worth a try if the opportunity presents itself.
