Wow. Finding it on tap is almost as rewarding as tasting one. Even if you’re not normally a stout drinker, order it and enjoy (from an IPA fan)

I didn't give this beer a great rating only because of the categories BA gives. Doesn't look or smell great but tastes great and high ABV.

The KBS pours a midnight black with a dark tan head that seems to have fine dark particulates in it. No problem though; No sign of those as you drink it. The head is rich and creamy and settles quickly with no lacing left on the glass. Most likely related to the high alcohol content.

The nose is spice, vanilla, alcohol, sweet beets, honey, bourbon and coffee all nicely blended.

The taste is really complex and this one should be drank at a warmer temp about 54 degrees. The flavors are very strong yet well blended. The coffee and Chocolate are dominant with the alcohol, 11.2%, taking up 3rd. I was very pleasantly surprised that the alcohol was not the most dominant characteristic. The hopping is also very strong for a stout, but not too strong. The hops make their presences known immediately with a tart bitterness that is the most dominant characteristic initially quickly fading to butter, chocolate, vanilla and sweet malt to finish extremely clean and with a tingly bourbon finish that is silky smooth.

I can see the reference to a breakfast stout. This is a very hefty and filling beer. Thought the mouth feel is not cloying and is surprisingly smooth but not too watery. The alcohol definitely affects many of the attributes but is nicely subdued by the complex nose and flavors.

Overall a fantastic beer. Too bad I am not likely to ever try this one again in my lifetime since it is such a limited run.

First off, it's called KBS Devil's Cut. The keg label said "KBS Special Reserve: 2 years in wood", but when it was put on the chalk board tap menu, it said "KBS Devil's Cut". The keg label was most likely made before Devils Cut was decided on.

This was something to be excited about if you were at the 2013 Founders Black Party. Yes this beer is KBS, but there's more to it then just an extra year in the bourbon barrel, thus making it a single barrel aged beer. Given the fact that Founders goes through very specific process blending certain barrels based on many factors resulting is achieving the best consistency they can, this was a big gamble. I'd have to say they beat the house.

A: black and beautiful

S: BOOZE! and the coffee and chocolate aromas seemed to be hiding behind the bourbon

T: Because this beer was so hot at 15.2%, the coffee and chocolate flavors were masked by the bourbon presence. The bottle version of this year's batch is fantastic with so much bourbon aroma and flavor that's only this present in the bottle and while fresh. It doesn't take long before it's more coffee and chocolate and then just more coffee. As for the Devil's Cut, it reminded of BCBS even that doesn't have coffee or chocolate. IMO, a great beer reminding of a great beer is not a bad thing.

M: Just as good as it should be

O: It's been long overdue for Founders do to a fun KBS variant and this one was a great way to do it again.
