750ml bottle poured into a Founders Brewing Company snifter.

The beer pours a rich apricot color, fairly clear with just a slight haze with a soft, fluffy, white head that has decent retention and leaves a nice amount of soapy lace behind. The aroma is brutal, tons of habenero spice, vegetal onion, earthy bitterness with almost no mango fruit to speak of. There is no sweetness to balance the beer at all, just pure, abusive heat. The taste is no different, punishing heat and vegetal habanero flavor, onions, grassy earthiness that is lightly bitter with no trace of alcohol or mango or even any malt profile to help counter the spice. The mouthfeel is shockingly juicy and coats the mouth very well, which really just scalds with beyond reason by the spice, and it does have a nice creamy feel at the finish and it goes down easily, which I can only suspect is an intended.

Verdict: Harsh, brutal, punishing, unforgiving and just awful. I applaud the idea from Founders, but like many spicy beers, this has no balance, no complexity and no nuances. Easily one of the worst concoctions I've tried to date. I'll just go back to waiting for their Harvest Ale and Breakfast Stout.

A- pours a clear and golden color with a small fizzy white head that retains shortly, eventually leaving a few patches floating on top, no lace but alcohol legs sticking around the glass

S- fresh sweet mango up front with notes of melon, ripe strawberry, formal notes. A slight burning sensation on the nostrils after a strong inhale, lingers of sweet malt at the end

T- sweet but subtle mango flavors mix with strawberry and a floral sweetness. Wow, this has a big heat kick! It immediately kicks in mid-palate and stays long into the finish and linger. The pepper flavor itself is barely detectable, but the heat is definitely there

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a big pepper burn on the palate that lingers long after. ABV is hidden well behind the heat of the pepper

O- one of the hottest pepper beers that I've tried, it paired nicely with cheese. Only downside is that the heat overpowers the sweetness of the mango somewhat. Food pairings, particularly dairy, work well with this one

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled in 8/2013. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber color with a 2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of mango, peach, pear, apple, honey, bread, light pepper, and herbal earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of mango, malt sweetness, and light pepper notes; with solid strength. Taste of big mango, peach, pear, apple, habanero pepper, honey, bread, and herbal earthiness. Good amount of habanero pepper spice/heat on the finish; with lingering notes of mango, peach, pear, apple, habanero pepper spice, honey, bread, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance of mango/malt sweetness and habanero pepper spice flavors; with no cloying sweetness or pepper spice after the finish; but a good amount of heat does linger. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately slick, smooth, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good spiced fruit beer. Good balance of mango, sweet malt, and habanero pepper flavors; and quite smooth to sip on for the the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.
