i had read many posts on the beer from founders, so when i found out i was going to GR for work i planned a trip to the brewery. I tried the breakfast stout a few days before going, and was impressed. however, when i got to the brewery the first thing i noticed was the lack of selection of beers on tap. The only four beers they had were the pale ale, ipa, red rye, and dirty bastard. all of which are above average beers, but i was excited to try the some of their other beers. The food was above average for pub fare. all in all it was a good experience. if i were to go back to GR i'd hit it up again. i would just prefer to have 8 or 10 beers to choice from when visiting a brewpub.
edit: went to founders last night (tuesday evening). i believe they had 14 brews on tap. i had a Canadian Break Stout, a Breakfast Stout, and a few Centenniel IPAs. my one gripe last time i came was the selection. i didn't take into account that they had just moved and were n't in full operation. i've only been to 15-20 brewpubs, but this one is definitely my favorite. a must visit when in Grand Rapids.

It's the Taproom for one of the best breweries in the America. It's flat-out amazing, not like psychedelic or once in a lifetime, it's just a really cool place. I can't say the atmosphere is perfect, because the HUGE amount of tables seems to make you think they want to sell food...
Until you sidle to the bar, grab a stool and start bullshitting with the staff. They know the beer, they all drink it, and they can all describe it in beer lingo so you can make an educated choice. Team approach to serving, so I have no idea who got the sweet 30% tip I left, but they were all friendly, they were eager to keep my glass full, and there was no awkward infighting between the staff. They all genuinely look like they love their job.
The beer is all quality; if you don't like a particular beer, it isn't the quality, it's just not your style. The food is good, servings are huge (a half-sandwich is perfect for normal people, the overeaters can get a full, but it isn't necessary).
Great place to eat and have a beer, I go every time I am in town.
