Came here for the 9th Annual Harvest Party with nicktbm and our better halves in October 2011.
Atmosphere: big open air taproom, chalkboard draught list hovers over a massive bar, plenty of seating inside and on the patio, pool table and jukebox are a nice touch, live music and young crowd provided an awesome party vibe, never seen so many college girls drinking craft beer in one place. A beer geek's utopia.
Service: fast efficient bartenders are quick with the drink orders and capable of suggesting beers based on specific tastes. Kitchen puts out food in decent time.
Selection: had a Harvest Ale, Berserker 37, Pale Ale, and Honey Harvest on tap and a bottle of Breakfast Stout to go. Couldn't understand why I wasn't allowed to drink the bottle in the bar (according to the server), but the draught beers were delicious so I didn't really mind.
Food: split a veggie French bread pizza with the lady and munched down a loaded bratwurst sausage as well. Both dishes tasted great and the prices are dirt cheap.
Overall: I would probably go to Founders on a daily basis if I lived in the area. Between the world-beating beers, fun and approachable atmosphere, friendly patrons, and tasty, affordable food, this brewery embodies North American craft beer culture. No need to ponder whether or not you should visit. Just come and you won't regret it.

2nd stop on my great midwest brewery tour.
Founders brewery and taproom located in downtown Grand Rapids. The atmosphere is that of a large and long hall with an equally long bar along the side. We arrived at 5:30PM on a Sunday and it was absolutely packed. Not so packed that you couldn't move but there were no tables or any seats available. There was a concert going on, a jazz orchestra, that plays the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. It wasn't too difficult to get beers from the bar and the bartender was friendly and fast.
The beer is uniformly excellent, we all know that. It was also very cheap, at least compared to California prices. I only had one beer, the all day IPA, as there was nowhere to sit and enly a few more. I did not sample the food but the menu consisted entirely of deli sandwiches and a few pizzas. They also have a store on site selling bottles to go and Founders merchandise.
A recommended place to go. If you don't like crowds then it probably helps to go earlier. Great beer and a great atmosphere.

This is a very busy place. Lots of seating and very open makes it a loud atmosphere but too bad. Bar service is good, wait service is average. Founders has an excellent reputation and it lives up to it. The quality was excellent but the broadness of the selection was only average. You can get free peanuts. Of course try the breakfast stout. No flights but the small samples are relatively inexpensive. Their werw a decent specialty beers. Parking is sparse compared to the seating . I guess overall the service could be better for the level of business, otherwise a decent brewpub

I travel to GR about once a month and this is my go-to for great beer and good food.
They usually have a solid tap list that includes some one-offs that you can't get anywhere but there. I haven't tried a beer there that isn't worthy of a solid score on BA!
The service is great with bartenders that are on key with service and knowledge of thier great beers. They are willing to give you a sample of anything you like for free.
The food is exceptional. I have tried many different sammies that are all good. The Godfather is the BOMB!
They have great specials depending on the night you come and offer a wonderful experience.
This is my favorite beer bar I have been to!

I was in Grand Rapids on business and had a chance to swing by. Founder's did not disappoint. I arrived around 4 with friends, by the time I left at around 7:00 there was a mob of people that were waiting for my table.
Very large place, very friendly, the servers were amazing, especially Gabriel.
I had the backwoods bastard pulled pork sandwich, was very excellent. It's really just a fun place that caters to people that love good beer and enjoy a relaxed friendly atmosphere. I will be back!

Been a mug club member since 2007. This place ROCKS! Maybe a little bias there. Seriously, whether you're a regular like me or a one-time visitor from out of town, you WILL be welcomed with open arms.
The servers are always open to people trying new things, and if you're a newbie an perhaps a little intimidated, don't be shy to ask for a taste of something before committing to a full glass. Right now (October) the beer menu is a little light on options. I hear they're pretty popular and its tough to keep up.
The food rating gets a 5! Yes they only serve sandwiches, but their deli staff take as much pride in their work as the brewers with their beer. The sandwiches are killer, and well worth the money.
The atmosphere does change day-to-day or even throughout the day. Lunchtime, you'll see may see some suits enjoying a beer and sandwich. Evening has the crowd getting out of work. Later at night, if there's a live band, the place is rocking.
Pretty much, a place for everyone.

Very chill and inviting place to be, open area with lots of seating indoors and out, a place where you can throw peanuts on the floor and enjoy a good beer with friends.
Service is solid, they know beer and are very friendly.
The food menu is mostly sandwiches and some odds and ends like dips and pizza, all very tasty. This is not necessarily a place I'd go specifically to eat, but if I go there for a beer and am hungry, I won't be disappointed.
The beer, the reason to go here, is excellent. There is a solid selection with a good range of styles, list changes frequently, but is available online. Three classes of beers from the standards to the specialties.
Prices are very reasonable, especially compared to other bars in the area. I can get a good pint here for the price of a generic lager up the street.
Value is even better on Mondays for cheap pint night (very busy, but worth it).

This place is huge. It has a nice party atmoshpere to it. Its definetly the hang out spot in Grand Rapids. I've been there on a Tuesday night and there wasn' a seat avaliable at all. They have some good food here. Nothing fancy just sandwiches, peanuts, and pretzels. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but man are they good. The staff here does a nice job even though they are overrun with people needing a glass refilled. Founders only has their brews on tap. They always have a nice selection broken down into 3 different classes.

Came here for the CBS release last week. I feel like I am more intimate with the outside of this building than the inside, seeing as I was in line before five in the morning until a little past 11am.
Inside, it is a very impressive and large seating and bar area. The only time I was inside was to get my beer, then the group I was with headed to the tables outside. It was a cool crisp day with bright blue skies. A perfect time to enjoy a couple of fresh CBS on tap. The staff was friendly, and did their best to accommodate everyone on such a stressful and busy day. The entire place looked like it was brand new (and I believe it is quite newly redone/expanded) and was a great time.
One complaint I have is that for such a big day, the only special beer on tap was CBS. I would have really enjoyed to try Cashew Mountain Brown or Black Note. Oh well!

I had no idea what to expect when I went into Founders. Certainly not the huge warehouse with a bar in it. The weather was nice so they had the doors to the outside open as well creating even more space. There could of been a hundred people in there and it still looked empty. There is one TV right in the center of the bar. Beer selections are written on the chalk boards. Disappointingly there was only one brewery only selection. I know the rest of the beer is very good, but I wanted something more special besides a 4% ABV pale ale. Menu consists of sandwiches and pizzas. The sandwich I did get was good if not a little uninspired. Service was prompt and also a little cold. You can tell these people see a lot of customers in a day.
Overall this was not a comfortable place to enjoy beer. Too big and commercial. Even have a giftshop on one end of the building. I hope Surly does not follow this model when they build their destination brewpub.
