Located in the Big Y shopping plaza in Newtown, CT.

My Place is a family owned and run business that has been in business for 30 years since it was started as "My Place Luncheonette" very close to where it is located today on Queen St and the corner of Main St.
In one of the corners is a small bar area with Red Sox and beer posters abound. A lot of regulars come here and make for a welcome atmosphere. At the present time, there are 5 taps and 1 cask that is running from time to time. My place does make use of these taps, currently the taps are: Old Rasputin, Gordon, Rodenbach, Gaffel Kolsch, Franziskaner. In addition to the taps, there is an impressive selection of bottles from Petrus, Orval, Corsedonk, Anchor, Sierra Nevada and more.

And sometime in the near future, they should have an outdoor addition to the bar made which includes more taps !

Great Family run beerstro and restaurant. Mark Tambascio is a serious beer man and has been the guest of Sierra Nevada and has brewed his own brew for Sierra while there, which we had the good fortune to taste: "Hop Smack Double Black". Great ambiance. Music during the week sometimes. Small space but maximized. Great, friendly, knowledgeable Bar men who are aware of their regulars. Red Sox Nation owner. Yankee Universe Bartender! Lots of fun. Normally a great selection of draft brews and they rotate regularly, Chalk board lists the Beer, the alcohol level and the price per pint so there are no surprises. Prices are reasonable and can run from $4 for locally brewed English Ales to $9 for some of the high test Belgian Trips. Food is serviceable Bar food. I tend toward the pizzas. Mark also makes his own sangria, both white and red and my wife often has him mix a "half and half".
Nice outdoor patio which they heat when the weather's a bit nippy. Welcoming atmosphere.
My wife and I moved from Newtown recently and anytime we get back to CT - we head to "My Place" - Still feels like home. Go there.

My family and I have been living in Newtown for almost 20 years now and growing up I have always found myself at My Place out to eat with friends, family or on my own for a drink. I know the owner pretty well, my brother used to work there as a server, as well as, help in the kitchen. I now live in Danbury, a couple towns away, and when I am in Newtown visiting family, I always make sure to stop in My Place for a beer. In my opinion, My Place has one of the best beer selections around, especially for the size of the bar that they have to work with. Visiting My Place over the past few years has inspired me to get more and more into beer and try new stuff, as well as potentially brewing my own beer down the road.

I highly recommend those who are into beer to visit My Place if they are ever in Newtown. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed and you will leave wanting to return as soon as possible. Not to say that their food is not good, because coming from an Italian family myself, their food is exceptional and pairs very nicely with the wide selection of beers that they offer.

This might be biased, but I live about 45 minutes from My Place.
I have some family that grew up in the area and said they knew of a place that had great beer, good food, and a great Red Sox atmosphere.
I got all of that and more. The people that run the place really know their beer, and they give the feel of a locally run bar that is tough to find these days.
The beer selection can be similar from day to day, but overall you can find some nice brews when you come here. The food here is well priced, and just as good tasting. Pizza is highly recommended as well as the appetizers.
All in all, if you want that classic bar experience where you feel among friends, enjoying good food and having a good time, this is a place for you.
P.S.
There is a great music experience happening here too with bluegrass and jazz happening regularly.

Great Place with a terrific selection, Americans to Belgians to whatever else you might be looking for. Several different styles rotating on tap with the daily specials and what's on tap. For selection My Place gets the highest marks. It gets packed so it's a bit tight in the bar sometimes but the people are great and the service is too. The pizza and other food is terrific. There's stuff here you won't want to miss, and it's a bit of a ride to get to, so plan ahead and bring a designated driver or come back every week.

I frequent My Place at least 4 times a month. Mark, the owner, obviously knows a lot about beer. I'm typically into IPA and they usually have at least one on tap out of their 6(?). There is usually at least 3 or 4 German and Belgians on tap. I also like the fact that they have had NEB's IST and Gold Stock on tap in the past three months. Also, their bottle selection is great, guaranteed to satisfy any beer lover. Their bottle prices are great, too. I had a OB Ten Fidy for only $6 and a DFH 90 min for only $5. If you aren't into what they have on tap, you can definitely enjoy their bottle list without breaking the bank.

The food variety is vast including pasta dishes, burgers, great salads, and a lot of appetizers. Everything I have had there is great.

Overall, My Place is a local bar where locals hang out, but you will also see some BA members at the bar checking out the selection. You will always feel like a welcomed guest there whether or not you frequent the bar regularly!

I really like My Place. Sometimes I feel like its a diamond in the rough of sorts. I didn't know about it until I did a random beer fly search of the area, and I didn't expect to find much until I got there.

You walk into a place that is basically a family owned pizza place, but swing a left when you walk in the door and you'll find the tap room. Its small, cozy, nice atmosphere. TVs with sports or whatever is on, pretty big bar, small surrounding tables. A stack of recent Yankee Brew News is always on a shelf when you walk into the bar.

Theres probably only 5 or 6 taps on at a time but always good choices, and rotated frequently. Sometimes theres REALLY good choices at My Place. Imperial Stout Trooper was on tap here for like two or three weeks straight, I thought I was in heaven. The owner/bar manager really knows his beer as well. Additionally, there is often something on cask available too. The bottle list is great, to boot.

The staff is super friendly, bartender(s) are cool. If you want to sample something before buying it don't be afraid to ask! The guy who is normally bar tending is great (don't know his name).

Ive only had a few dishes here, but they were enjoyable. Ive had a pasta dish that was excellent, a classic fish and chips which was decent, and a pizza which I enjoyed as well. Ive been meaning to try a burger here, maybe next time.

I highly recommend My Place, more people should check it out.

I picked this place based on ratings from BeerAdvocate.com and a recommendation from Mark and Tess at Maltose Express in Monroe (a very awesome HBS store!). I'll start by saying that the overall rating of "A" is well deserved. I felt welcome from the moment my wife and I walked in until the moment we left. They had 8 or 9 beers on type and too many bottled beers to count. I tried the Thomas Hooker Nor'Easter and the Sierra Nevada Celebration after trying several very generous samples of the beers on tap. The samples, by the way, are free. Mark, who was tending bar at the time, seemed to know quite a bit about the various beers and didn't mind taking the time to answer my questions about them.

I thought the food was exceptional. I had a MR Texas Burger recommended by our server and it was cooked perfectly. The bun was made of some kine of pretzel bread which I had never tasted before but it really made the burger. I'll go back again just for that burger but the friendly and professional staff will make a return trip an easy choice too.

What I liked best is that this place didn't break the bank. Lunch and a few drinks for my wife and I came to around $35.00. I thought this was very reasonable based on the quality of the food and the portion sizes. I felt I might not be able to finish the burger because it was so big.

I'll be going back to this place often.

This was my first trip to My Place, a Father's Day visit with the whole family. I had heard about it's great reputation for beer but I didn't expect much in the food category. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the place as a casual restaurant. The restaurant itself is medium sized, maybe 20 tables, bigger than I envisioned. They have a separate area near the main entrance for take out as their specialty in food is Italian, particularly pizzas. The food was very good, nothing gourmet fancy or anything, but definitely a bit creative and tastey. Lots of pizzas but also pastas, fish, etc. as well as salads of many varieties including fruit and nut accesories. I had a very nice pasta with red clam sauce, my son was pleased with the pizza, and my wife's salmon was also good. A veggie burger for the daughter was a hit, too. Service was prompt (although it wasn't busy at 7PM on a Sunday) and we did get some good input on both food and drink. All staff were friendly and courteous. As for the beer, my only disappointment was that there were only five taps so the selection is not extensive, but it is an excellent selection none the less. I had the Captain Lawrence IIPA and the Reissdorf Kolsch, both very enjoyable and absolutely fresh served in appropriate vessels. They also had a trippel and a couple other exotics available which I would have sampled had I been out with the guys. I didn't have a chance to check out their bottled selection but I understand that it is very good. Apparently they switch out the taps very regularly so you have to check in on their website to keep up with what is flowing from week to week. So considering that, it seems like you have the best scenario for excellent choices and always fresh brews. Also, the bar "room" is really tiny. Only a few stools and a couple of small tables & chairs. I will have to check it out more for my next visit but you might have trouble with a group if you're not there for dinner. It is cozy though and I believe that quality, not quantity is the theme here. Not a bad way to go. Definitely recommended.

An great place to grab a beer. A small but very well picked selection of great beer from all around the world able to please any palate. It's just a small bar that's part of a larger restaurant, so there isn't to much room to hang out with a large crowd. But then again, you can actually hear yourself think, or even hear the redsox game that's on the tv. I love this place!!

The owner really knows his beer. He is always willing to describe his selection, and even offer food pairings to go with your brew. The restaurant offers anything from a cheese pizza to a glazed duck, so don't worry about satisfying your appetite either.

I have been comming here for years prior to turning 21 years old and have always lover the food. They make some of the best pizza I have ever had, and thier entres are decent as well.

My buddy Nick (who reviewed this place two spots below me) introduced me to thier bar area which I had never really payed much attention to in the past. What an introduction! Of all the times I have been there, I have always walked away with a new favorite brew. They have a great variety on tap that rotates every week and sometimes even throughout the night. The bartender, Mark, is very helpful and beer wise.

Many great times and great laughs with the guys. This is THE place to go if your in the area.

Well, if you like beer, you will love "My Place"...

It's a labor of love, this "My Place"...the beers on tap here are very special...and the really nice people who work there....and the beer bar....and the glassware....simply incredible!
The chicken wings are unreal. So good... Huge and spicy, and perfect with a kolsch...top-notch wings! (The calamari salad is also top notch.) I've been here many times, and the whole family loves it.

Do yourself a favor and check out "My Place."

This is the ONLY bar/restaurant I go to regularly.

Every week Mark (one of the owners, and a beer guru) bartends, and offers an excellent, ever-changing selection of beer on tap... usually about six at a time, and ocassionally something available from the cask. Over this year, I've had Rodenbach Classic, Cantillon Iris, Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Urthel Hop-It, Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel, Saison Dupont, Tripel Karmeliet, Old Rasputin Imperial Stout, and many other high-end beers on tap there that I would NEVER see anywhere else on tap, at least not around here. All the beers are served in proper glassware (often the particular beer's signature glassware).

You'll often find plenty of true beer enthusiasts in the bar after and during dinner hours (it does sometimes get crowded in that little bar on a Tuesday evening).

Plus the restaurant itself is quite large, and the pizza is phenomenal. Good old New York style, with strong mozzarella, crisp thin crust, and great sauce. Just a good straight up cheese pizza (maybe with some extra garlic and basil) is one of the best things to get there, as well as their classic "My Pie" - a white mozzarella pie with garlic, bacon, broccoli, eggplant, ricotta, and then diced tomatoes thrown ontop after it comes out of the oven. The pasta dishes are also exceptional. It's a great place to go whether you want to split a pizza with the guys, or have a nice classy dinner with a lady.

If you're in the area (for some reason), make sure to stop in there.

A pizza take out, small Italian Restaurant and a Mini-Taproom all in one. The pizza is decent and the food pretty good (Italian based menu). What is really important here is the beer!

Bottled beer list is great. From Wiess to Belgians to assorted americans. The tap list is really where it is at. Maybe not a travel destination from far and wide but this little place is a goldmine for anyone within reasonable driving distance or driving across CT on Route 84. Currently on tap is Harpoon 100bbl Saison, Cantillon Iris, Hofbrau Munchen Oktoberfest, Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold (shhh), Reissdorf Kolsh, Celebrator and Hooker Oktoberfest Cask. Mark keeps the beers fresh and rotating and the atmosphere is always quite friendly.

Stop by often...

This is an unusual place. I'll let the other reviewers describe the layout. The beer portion of the business is aimed at the high end of the beer world and this is a good thing! Correct glassware is the norm here. 6 taps, one cask and about 20 bottles. Its comfortable, cozy, friendly and the owner is a big sports fan, so expext the game to be on. Taps included selections from Cantillon, Capt. Lawrence, Harpoon, and the cask was the octoberfest from Thomas Hooker. Great to enjoy a nice lambic and also the Saison (100 barrel series) from Harpoon on tap.A small place like this with a cask up and pouring, shows the love of beer that is going on here. We ordered food from the Italian based menu and enjoyed a tasty meal. Well worth a visit

Stopped in for a late lunch and a few brews on a Saturday evening. Located in an old post office separate from a supermarket, shopping plaza in Newtown. A convenient location not hard to find even for those not familiar with the Newtown/Bethel area.

An interesting set-up with a pizza take out section greeting you at the main entrance. To the left is the "bar" section of the establishment that has about three tables and an eight foot bar. This small room is neatly tucked away in a corner of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is filled with Italian/American decor with about twenty tables.

Six beers on tap that I counted. Highlights were Rodenbach's Red and de Ranke's Guldenburg. The bottled selection was quite impressive consisting of about forty offerings. A few of the bottles included: DFH Immort, Rogue's Old Crustacean, JW Lees vintages, Corsendonk Brown, etc. The beer menu was a bit outdated but was divided by style including: Belgian specialties, Bocks, Pales/IPAs, Barleywines/Strong Ales, etc. Note: a good variety of these bottles boast vintage dates. Trust me and try one of your favorites brewed a decade ago!

Service was prompt and pleasant; nothing to complain about. The food is almost solely based in Italian cuisine. The pizza was solid and the calzone was very satisfying. Not a huge variety, but a nice quality of the Italian/American cuisine. Better than your typical take-out pizza joint.

Stopped in here on a Friday afternoon at about 3pm. Had the taproom to myself for a while. Tried the Rodenbach Red and the Corsendonk Christmas Ale on tap. Enjoyed the Christmas Ale so much that I returned with my girlfriend the next night for pizza and a few beers.

We ordered pizza with chicken and red peppers...very good , nice crust. We sat in the tap room at one of the three or four tables there. The service was very friendly and fast and we both really liked the atmosphere...small room...lots of international beer stuff on the walls.

A couple of women came in ; noticed our Corsendonk glasses and asked how we liked it. After we raved about how good it was, and they sampled a few other beers, they also decided on the Corsendonk. This opened up a lengthy discussion on Belgian beers, food, travel and social commentary. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to order another round and stay awhile.

The selection, both on tap and in bottles was impressive. The owner knows his beers, and he and the waitress were both very friendly.

We both agreed that this is a great little place to stop by for a beer or have some food...lucky for us , it's close to home. We're looking forward to returning and trying out some more Belgians and learning about some other styles.

Update 4/06
Have been here several times now...it is consistently good.
Tap selection always awesome...food good..service always friendly and very helpful...always a friendly crowd. Great Place !!

I like this place alot, I liked the thought of it before I went and I was not dissapointed; I did not eat Pizza, although I here it is the type that you eat there rather than take out, but anyway, thats hearsay.

We had some kidsmeals and some burgers, And I had a Corsendonk Christmas ale that was quite nice; They also had a Kolsch, a popular Cider and Rodenbach Red Felmish Sour Ale on tap. I put myself on the e-mail list for tuesdays, when the real fun begins. I will be attending there in the future.

A really nice family and casual place to go if you are in the Newtown area.

I didn't review this gem b/c I really wanted to keep it a secret. J/k...

Hands down the best bar for the size, quality and variety in CT. That one beer tree sees some of the most tasty exclusive brews you could imagine. Remember to email mark and get on his mailing list so you know what's gonna be on the beer tree. Mark is also very knowledgeable and a great person to boot. Last time I was there I was drinking La Rulles Tripel of tap and had a sample of Harviestoun's Bitter and Twisted. Mmmm, mmmm good. People if your gonna go, drop me a pm. I live 10 minutes from there.

ps Tuesdays all you can drink off tap for $20. That's normally when the new kegs are coming too.

Much love to everyone at My Place,
Michael

stopped by here for a beer tasting event.. it was my first time and won't be my last. too bad its the furthest beer destination for me in practically all of connecticut! exterior shows a very inconspicuous brick building with green shutters, at the forefront of a mini-strip mall plaza type thing. side note, the liquor store tucked in the back corner of said plaza is a nice place to grab a bottle for take-home as well.

"tap room" section of the restaurant is on your left after you walk into the main area. it's painfully small, but filled with passion. tightly packed in bar stands in the corner, with room for 5-6 patrons. classy collectible brewerania covers the walls, and a tv rests in the back of the room. seating for probably 8 to 10 people.. standing room as well, but that's when it gets a bit packed. floaters have no recourse except to place their asses in the faces of those who are sitting at the tables.

six taps i believe, each with something different.. rotating often (usually thanks to terry at mountview) and offering something for every course of your meal.. something for the taste of every beer drinker. when i was here, there was a belgian dark, a kolsch, a hoppy ipa, a saison, a fruit beer, and dunkel. not alot, but shows real thought. nice bottle selection as well, but this is a place that commands your enjoyment of fresh beer.

food was good.. pizza is in the new york style, hand-tossed crusts and standard toppings. typical family italian fare.. lots of breaded and fried options. shellfish looked good but i didnt sample. not necessarily my favorite pairings with beer.. i liked how the tasting was arranged, eat first and beer later.

beer prices were average approaching steep ($5 for a pint of ipa?) but food prices were excellent.

mark was a great guy, friendly and knowledgable. very enthusiastic about beer.. his waitstaff is just that, a waitstaff- not a beer support team. thats fine though, he seems to be around all the time anyway.

i'll be back on my next trip home from half time..

While the bar is a bit small, the availability of rare Belgian style brews on tap and great service make a trip here worthwhile. There are about seven taps and Mark, the owner, informed us that they change weekly. His friendliness and knowledge of beer made my brother and I feel at home immediately. I stuck to sampling beer from the tap. Over the course of the night, I tried a Lindeman's Framboise, Mardesous 12, ValDieu Triple, and a Saison Dupont. I was impressed that in true Belgian fashion, each of the beers we drank was served in its matching glass. If you are in the southern CT area I would highly recommend a stop here.

While it is no doubt frustrating to want to peruse a bottled beer list only to be told they really don't have an updated one, you can't argue with th quality of the beers or the selection. The owner, Mark Tambascio, is a certified beer judge and award-winning home brewer who is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about beer. And it shows in his bar. His tap selection is small in quantity (around 7 taps) but high in quality. He serves some of the most interesting beers on tap in the entire country. Really. I consider myself a regular punter as I'm in this bar at least once a week. Last night, for instance, the taps were Ayinger Octoberfest, Einbecher Pils, Smuttynose IPA, Maastrict Aajt Flemish Red Ale, Celebrator Doublebock, and Goudon Carlous Grand Cru. A nice selction indeed. He also has Cantillon lambics of varying styles on tap practically year-round and traditional cask ales from the U.S. and U.K. in season. The food is family style Italian-American, and while CT no doubt has an overabundance of this genre, it is well done and served in decent portions. All his beers are served in the proper glassware as well. The trick is to eat, and drink obviously, in the bar area where the aforementioned owner, Mark, bartends. He's extremely friendly and, again, filled with beer knowledge. he knows all of the over 100 bottled beers for sale, but a list would be nice for when he's not there. Some of the waitstaff may need some beer training, but that can be said of many places. The bar area is small, but welcoming in an English county pub kind of way. At any rate, a great locals bar with great beer. Let's hope he puts together a bottled beer list soon.

I was looking for a decent place to go eat and remembered this place so we decided to drive over to check it out. Nice looking place with a small bar. Sat down at a table and there was a small draft, 5-6, beer list; Masreechs Ajt, Victory Hop Devil, Thomas Hooker Octoberfest (not yet tapped), St Bernardus 12, Reichsdorf???Kolsh. I asked if there was a bottle list and was told by the waitress that there wasn't one but "I tell the customers that we have Sam Adams, Bud, stuuf like that". Restaurant was kind of empty and saw no bottles at any table, Ordered the Hop Devil and food. Food was all right,, nothing special. I went to the bar, fairly crowded, no bottle list, no bottles on shelf showing what they have, only some empty Belgians, Giradan Gueze and the Cantillion that only like 30 cases shipped. What bugged me was that near the end of dinner I saw a waitress walk through the restaurant area with an empty Chimay bottle so they had more than Sam Adams.

I know they get reviewed well and maybe it was an off night, but I don't think that I will go back

We stopped by this place today for lunch after hitting Maltose Express to get stuff to make today.
If I hadnt found this place on BA I would never know to stop here for beer. The place is basically a pizza/italian place mostly restaurant seating with a cordoned off bar area and a few tables in there as well. The beer list is not even close to updated but they do have a ton of good brews. You just have to ask a few before you get one you want. If they updated their list I would give higher scores for service and quality. It is hard to order good brews if you dont know what they have available. There are 5 taps and they rotate them fairly regularly. Old Marley was one of the choices today.
The food was pretty good. I split a pizza with two friends, no skimping on toppings here. the potato skins were tasty too.
I also was surprised to get a pint glass for my Ommegang brew, was hoping for a snifter. But how many places actually serve ommegang in bottles? Overall a nice stop and I will go again. I really wish they had an updated bottle list though.
