The Huckleberry...well, I'll be honest and say the only reason I ever visited this place was because it was right next to a Chinese place that I frequent, and because I live on the AA-Ypsi border, and the only other options nearby are Hiller's and Whole Foods.
The Huckleberry surprised me when I ventured in though. On the outside it looks like a typical party store: i.e.: macro only...but inside there is actually a very decent selection of products. The emphasis is heavy on the locals, including the rarer Arcadia releases, but there are also a number of imports and a large Unibroue stand.
Most of the beers are available warm, as most of the Rogue/Jolly Pumpkin/&c. are kept on simple, low shelving near the coolers. A decent quantity of beer is kept chilled in the cooler, and it seemed to be the beer that needed to be kept chilled, i.e.: the lighter wheat beers and such.
The quality of the beers that I purchased from there seemed to be fine. I have no idea how quickly they churn through product, but I never had an issue. The help, as alluded to below, is variable. The owner definitely knew his stuff and was happy to discuss beer (and the city of Grand Rapids) with me while the other staff seemed friendly but fairly lost.
Prices, I mark it as a bit pricy, but that seems to be true anywhere in the city of Ann Arbor and Ypsi.
Overall, this is a good option if it's local to you, or if you are picking up Chinese food in the area. If I lived downtown AA I would never make the trip up there, because places like Main Street and the Beer Depot have a much deeper selection in my favourite beer styles, but, as I said, for those who live in east AA and Ypsi, this is a nice, faster pickup option, and I'm glad it's available.

Located in the strip mall across from the A&W.
Good variety of MI brews. Equally good selection of out of state breweries. He has a couple trappists and good belgians, as well as a few really good Euro brews. They have a better than average selection of mixed 12 packs. They don't carry as many labels as Beer Depot, Big Ten, or Bello Vino, but they have a good variety of solid beers.
On the downside, most of the beer is kept on warm shelves or open and brightly lit refrigerated shelves. And a few good six packs wedged in with a bunch of macros in a standard sliding glass cooler. There's also a warm display cooler full of six packs that must be accessed by walking around the back which would seem weird to a new customer. Regulars know its cool to walk around and slide open the door, but I've been in there numerous times when customers were frustrated by not being able to just slide open the glass and take what they wanted.
Service is another issue that could be helped here. If you go in while the owner, Chip, is there, you get good service from a guy who knows his beers. The regular staff are all cool people, but they aren't up to speed on the product. One thing that I've noticed about their price tags is that they have the month and year that the beer was tagged. From my experience with buying here and talking with the owner, he very rarely has to change the price of a beer. When that happens, its usually old beer that is placed on the discount table in the SW corner of the store.
The prices vary, but tend to be a little higher than other local stores. $9.99 for a JP Bier de Mars or a 750 of La Chouffe is too much.
Not as extensive or adventurous in selection as some of the other local stores, but if you are in the area its worth checking out.
