Asterix has been one of the first places to sell good quality beers in Sao Paulo. It has one of the best selections in Town. Nice to see that they serve our beloved ones in their right dresses. It is a small place not very comfortable, most of the tables are on the sidewalk as are the other bars next to it, that is why the whole place is called prainha (little beach in Portuguese). Food is the usual pub grud (not gastro...).
Prices, with the exception of some promotions (usually close to expiration date), are quite steep, even comparing to much nicer places in town such as Emporio Alto de Pinheiros. They established in a time that imported beers were more expensive, and they have kept it as it was (and likely their steep mar-up margin). As a result you see the tables ordering Nortenha as opposed of one of their good choices, which it is a pity. Thus selection is quite nice, abundant (though some items in the menu are out of stock), and broad based. Waiters are not really beer connoisseurs or craft beer lovers, service as a regular Ambev bar.

Just a stone's throw from Avenida Paulista is Asterix, a small beer establishment with a number of surprises. First off, be ready to drink quality beer, because everyone else here is doing the same thing. Second off, keep your jaw from dropping when you see some of the offerings. And they're not terribly expensive for São Paulo. A good mix of imports and domestic: Guinness Special Export Stout, Backer, Weihenstephaner, Unibroue, DaDo, Eggensberg, Cantillon, La Trappe...even Westvleteren. The list is quite long, in the vicinity of 150-200 bottles. Hofbrau was even on-tap, which was one of the five draft beers available. Third, expect your beer to be served in the right glassware, although the beer may be a little colder than you'd like, so gets your hands warm. Fourth, know a little Portuguese, or you might in trouble. Despite my trouble communicating, the service was willing to help, and it was even entertaining on a few instances. Still, it took a little effort on my part to let them know I wanted the Special Export Guinness.
Overall, this place gets a thumbs up from me. A customer base that loves beer, a killer beer selection...I'll take it. Well worth the stop, and don't forget to put this on your bar crawl.
Update 10/10/10: Those prices are way up in comparison to other bars. On a lighter note, there are now 8 taps pouring.

What a great find. A total hole-in-the-wall, with two thin lines of tables inside leading up to a service-only bar, and an nice outdoor patio.
Food was serviceable (I had some corned beef with onions and polenta fries that filled me up nice), if unimpressive. Place has the cool vibe of a place run by someone truly passionate about beer... and for a poor American with no grasp of Portugese, having an owner (Alex) and server (I forgot your name, sorry) that both spoke passable English was a HUGE plus.
They'll sell you glasses and any of their beers to go (and they had 4 bottles of Westvyleteren 8... of course, at just over $100 US per bottle.... I passed).
Beers in Brazil look to be generally pretty pricey, so although there were a couple Belgians I had yet to see in the States (which is saying something as much as I travel), I kept to the locals. Glad I did. EVERYTHING came in its own, personal glass, and from the wall o' glass, that's the standard. Nothing was too cold, nor too warm. Just right.
At the conclusion of my meal Alex came over and we chatted about beer for a bit and he gave me some recommendations of places to visit while I was in town. I might not get to them all... but between this and my next visit, I'll make it happen.
Thanks, Alex!

Quite a surprise! A small bar, located near 4 more bars. Looking at it, you would never suspect the great selection of beers this place have. More than 20 countries represented!
Service is quite friendly, fast and well learned in the art of beer.
Food is the usual bar stuff (at least in Brazil), always serving 2 or more fellas with one plate.
The only bad thing is the size of this place. Too small, always overcrowded.
I drank a wide selection of beers, including my first Deus. All with the correct glassware and temperature. Just a tip: haggle with the waiters/manager, and you can win some really good bargains!
