I have been visiting the Steinbach Brau for the past five years whenever I visit Erlangen. I have probably passed 20 visits by now.
The Steinbach Brau is one of only a couple of breweries still operating in Erlangen which used to the brewing capital of Bavaria before the advent of electric refrigeration. The nearby hill where they hold an annual beer festival in May, has miles of caves that are ideal for natural refrigeration and beer storage. Don't miss the festival if you have a chance.
They always have two draft beers on the menu one of which is their Storchenbier, an unfiltered Munich Helles. This beer is named after the Storks which have been nesting on the roof for years. They have a webcam of the nests that can be viewed during the daylight hours.
The second beer rotates every few weeks and offers a number of interesting styles dependent on when you visit. Some of my favorites are the Dinkelbier and the 5-Korn but have rarely been disappointed. They also produce their Hefeweizen year round for delivery to local restaurants.
The inside is decorated fairly modern with wooden tables with the copper brewhouse being the main decor of the upstairs. Downstairs there is additional space for busy times. Munich malt to snack on served in bowls on the inside tables can be addictive.
When the weather is warm enough they open the outside tables which is my favorite area. In the summer they also offer food cooked outdoors and the brats are very good. I have not tried the indoor food often but when I have it was good.
They have a museum that offers tours on certain days shows a history of brewing in Erlangen which is interesting to see if you have a chance.
I have had the opportunity to get to know the head brewer at the brewery and some members of the Gewalt family which not only owns the brewery but also a malting business in a nearby town. In my experiences they have all been very friendly and welcoming.
Highly recommend this nice jewel in Erlangen.

I stopped in in March 09. This place appears to be a modern brewpub in an old brewery. They have some beer memorabilia from earlier days of the brewery, including a rack in the basement where locals can individually lock up their mugs. It's not clear if this is still in use.
They have a main room where you enter, with the bar. It's got a few tables, the bar at one end, and two copper brewing vessels on one side. There is alot of copper piping running about, with fake hops in full bloom hanging around the bar. There is a second room behind the tanks, and a large basement with another bar.
The tables, lights, etc seem fairly new. At the tables they set out munich malt to munch on, which is difficult to stop eating. They had two beers on tap when I visited, a light lager and a weizen, but they have others on their menu. Standard looking menu with some vegetarian items, but I arrived after the kitchen closed. Lots of locals here on a weeknight.
Currently open daily 17-24, 1am on friday and saturday. Kitchen open until 22. To take away they have 2 liter growlers and 5 liter kegs.
