Served at a local watering hole in St. Thomas

I wanted to try Blackbeard Ale, but since no place on this island has it I was forced to settle for this. This beer was served a pale golden straw color and smelled of lemons, slight grassy hops. The taste was surprisingly good thinking of all of the Cervezas that were the alternate option. There was good malty caramel body to go with the slight cardamon like sweetness. It is smooth and refreshing and a really nice way to beat the heat. Overall I really did enjoy this and for the style it was quite a nice find on the island.

A - Bright, highly carbonated, high white head that lingers.

S - Very light aroma of grass with a touch of hops. What is there is good, it is just hardly there.

T - Pale malt, some grain, touch of citrus from hops all good...then ends with a slight metallic twang. The flavor are not bad, it is just too bad they don't jump out more.

M - Light body, finishes clean.

D - Nothing memorable, comes across a bit weak, but on the other hand it is not offensive and is refreshing.

Crystal clear pale golden brew, a sufficient amount of head with some lacing on the glass. The aroma jumps from a grainy, almost husky, tone to a faint fume of alcohol. Grainy as soon as the gates open, a bit of sweetness makes it way out but quickly vanishes. Both malt and hops become a bit thin with a hard husk note form the grain and a faint sharpness of a watery citric hoppiness. Gritty, nearing astringent and a faint yeast note in the back. Finishes with a dry and thin graininess that does not totally go clean and right at the end the bottom drops with a fading astringency.

I’m not really digging this one, if this was just a plain no frills blonde ale that would have been fine but there are definite flaws here that show after a few sips in a row. Not huge glaring flaws but none the less flaws. Enough to the point of not being able to finish the bottle and that is the breaking point.

Thanks to BMan1113VR for providing this bottle.

Pours a semi-hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is similar to an adjunct lager with some corn notes. The flavor is more of the same with some grain. Thin mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

Clear pale gold brew, minimal head to it, hence lacing not so much. Lacking the fruit aroma that the other beers in the series have. Neutrual aroma.

Without the tropical fruit, you're just left with an unambitious average blond ale. Not much for hopping, extremely light bodied beer. You can find some of the tropics in this if you go looking for it, but compared to the other 2 beers, this one is lacking in the fruit department.

Strangely enough, this one is the least enjoyable of the 3 I've had, yet is probably the highest rated on this website of the three. My taste is diametrically opposed to everyone else's on this website as far as these beers go.

Somewhat sour wheat but I would agree that I would drink this if I were out a day on the beach. Not super drinkable, but drinkable. Pure yellow bodied.JoshuaR’s bottle. A little astringent. Some caramel, not much wheat. A tad of citrus. Not the best in their lineup.

Contract brewed by Shipyard. St. Johns Island Summer Ale is a basic golden ale brewed with Ringwood yeast. The addition of mango, however, gives iit an interesting, refreshing, and almost sweet fruitiness. I'm not sure how it woud go beyond one serving, but I enjoyed my first. I could definitely see it as a brew to try at a backyard BBQ in the summer.

A: Pours a great looking golden color with a half finger head. Looks almost commercial.
S: Unremarkable in that you can smell some sweet malt and some citrus but it's very faint and not totally pleasing.
T: Its more sweet than anything else. Hints of lemon but seems to be void of hops to balance the sweetness.
M: light bodied and finishes sweet. Not much else.
D: It would be a session beer on vacation. Very light, a decent enough taste and small abv.

Bottle: Poured a bright golden color ale with a large foamy white head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of light sweet malt with some bland cereal. Taste is not overly complex with some lightly sweet malt with a somewhat refreshing taste of cereal and a light dry hops at the end. Body is fuller then average with OK carbonation. Not bad but nothing too write home either.

Appearance: Crystal Clear. huge head. Best part of this beer.

Smell: Nothing. I mean nothing noticeable here.

Taste: Not too bad. good balance between hop and malt flavors. Slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied.

Drinkability: This would be excellent on the beach. I think it suits its market as well as those heat loving houstonians such as myself!

Bottle from BotMC. Not a very impressive beer.

A: Pours golden with a nice head. Head fades quickly with no lacing.

S: Nice smell - some lemon/coriander.

T: Rather plain. The smell left me expecting more, but unfortunately the beer did not deliver. Pale american lager. Somewhat acidic. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

M: Moderate carbonation.

D: Fairly drinkable, probably because it's light and plain.

An OK beer after mowing the lawn, but I really can't recommend it for much more.

I had this beer on tap at the brewery in Cruz Bay, St. John. The bottled version of this beer is contract brewed by Shipyard. The tap beer at the brewery is brewed on premise, suppossedly. OK, so the beer poured a very slightly hazy golden yellow color with a small white head. Light aromas of grain and mild citrus. Taste is mild but grain and a light lemon zest dominate the palate. The beer does become quite astringent after a while, but it gets the job done when it's 90 degrees and humid out. Overall, I was more impressed with their Inaugural Ale than this brew. If your down in the islands, it's worth a try, otherwise pass for another of their brews.

I got this beer from a little convenience store down the alley that the Virgin Island Brewery Store was on. It was just off the main street on the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie. I like many people (I guess) thought that the St. Johns Brewery and The Virgin Islands Brewing Company are one in the same but they are not. The guy working at the counter was very helpful and even bargained with me over the price and let me make a mixer sixer. He knew a lot about the beers as well. It is in the same covered alley as the Harley Davidson Souvenir Shop. There store did not seem to have a name but a great selection of American and Caribbean beer. I bought a six pack and some loose bottles the next stop was to find a glass so I could inspect my new found beers.

Appearance- A nice golden amber and bubbly with a good amount of lace.

Smell- A fruity odor was not too strong but had a firm presence as soon as the bottle was opened.

Taste- This beer was very nice and balanced. The hops and the malt complimented each other well. There was like bean taste present as well.

Mouthfeel- Slightly carbonated but a little thin.

Drinkability- Very easy to drink and hardly any aftertaste.

From tap to shaker glass at the St. John Brewing Taproom on 6/5/11
*From notes

It should be noted that this is listed as a filtered half wheat, half pale ale.

A: Late day sunny gold. Brilliant with a one finger head and little to no lacing.

S: A bit like yeasty melon. Muted alcohol and faint essence of pine.

T: A good bit of hearty tropical pine and Belgian style yeast. The barley comes through in a big way from beginning to end, and a note of alcohol is apparent on the mid to finish.

M: Creamy and a bit oily, though it suits the brew.

O: St. John's Island Summer Ale is a bit heavier then I'd expected, but it still drinks pretty well. I ended up having quite a few of these by the bottle too, and couldn't really have more then a few due to the beer's overall richness. Not the best beer in the St. John line up, but certainly a nice little beer I enjoyed while swimming in the Caribbean Ocean, off the shore of the Soggy Dollar Bar.

A BOTMC selection that arrived in a box at my door, can't beat that, let's give it a whirl. Popping the top one gets a whiff of lemongrass and citrus. The brew pours to a golden yellow with some brightness and a multi sized two finger head. On the taste the lemony flavor is even more evident, it hits you up front, then there is a dull bitterness in the backgound that doesn't bite but barks. There is some spiciness like nutmeg in the background also but the lemon id predominant. Carbonation is crispy, a requirement for a light hot weather brew. Good beer for the VI and the steady heat but also steady ocean breeze. Good brew, not something I would look to again, but I wouldn't reject it if it is in the hurricane stockpile.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a bright gold color, with a short white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of light malts, grain, some hops and a touch of fruit.

T: The taste is a little bready with flavors of grain, tropical fruits and some spice. The malt character is light and there's a mild hops presence. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, light-to-medium body, medium-to-high carbonation, finish is clean.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, this a decent BBQ to relax with and drink for a while. I'm not sure I'd want to drink too many of them myself, but I think it would appeal to the Magic Hat #9 crowd.
