Best enjoyed before: 6/2015. 4.2% ABV per the label.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of white grape juice, perfume, and slight nail polish remover aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, artificially flavored grape juice, and slight grape jelly flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a below average beer that has some fairly unpleasant nail polish remover and artificial fruit qualities going on.

Look: Little gold in color; transparent. Pours with a slight amount of white foam on the surface of the beer that disappears quickly. Looks rather dead after a few minutes. Looks like a low grade commercial beer.

Smell: Mild, malty aroma. Kind of like a cheap commercial lager or ale.

Taste: Mild malty taste with a unpleasant hoppy, bitter finish. Barely serviceable.

Feel: On the watery-side with an unpleasant dry finish.

Overall: It was drinkable, but not enjoyable. I have no interest in having another. (523 characters)

I highly recommend this good example of the style. American blondes don't always have a lot of personality, but this one works in a bikini!

I had this in a little shop in Frederiksted while shopping for souvenirs. What a nice surprise. There aren't a lot of Good Caribbean beers, but this is a decent one.

It has a decent head and a great aroma. The taste is yeasty, hoppy, and bitter, all in small doses. It works.

I was disappointed that there wasn't a good best place anywhere in the town, as we had already decided not to go to the bigger town on our one day visit. Bit I was pleaded to try one good local brew. My son liked it too. (641 characters)

Somewhat sour wheat but I would agree that I would drink this if I were out a day on the beach. Not super drinkable, but drinkable. Pure yellow bodied.JoshuaR’s bottle. A little astringent. Some caramel, not much wheat. A tad of citrus. Not the best in their lineup. (268 characters)

poured into a sierra nevada flared pint glass. the hops etched into the glass caused a huge tornado of bubbles to rise into a nice bright white head.

smell is grains and sugar and musty

taste is grains with sweet phenols, decent balance.

mouthfeel is crisp and watery and dry

very average overall, would probably be good mixed in with a session of pina coladas while sitting on a beach. (390 characters)

A: Single finger white head on a clear pale golden body.

S: subtle sweet lemon and pale malts. Relatively full on the nose for the style.

T: some pale malts but mostly some mild musty almost noble hop flavors without the bitterness and a mild corriander and lemon citrus note.

M: light to medium body and moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: not bad for the style. Flavorful and refreshing. Fairly ideal summer ale. Rating is based on both the genre and overall quality. (476 characters)

Served at a local watering hole in St. Thomas

I wanted to try Blackbeard Ale, but since no place on this island has it I was forced to settle for this. This beer was served a pale golden straw color and smelled of lemons, slight grassy hops. The taste was surprisingly good thinking of all of the Cervezas that were the alternate option. There was good malty caramel body to go with the slight cardamon like sweetness. It is smooth and refreshing and a really nice way to beat the heat. Overall I really did enjoy this and for the style it was quite a nice find on the island. (577 characters)

From tap to shaker glass at the St. John Brewing Taproom on 6/5/11
*From notes

It should be noted that this is listed as a filtered half wheat, half pale ale.

A: Late day sunny gold. Brilliant with a one finger head and little to no lacing.

S: A bit like yeasty melon. Muted alcohol and faint essence of pine.

T: A good bit of hearty tropical pine and Belgian style yeast. The barley comes through in a big way from beginning to end, and a note of alcohol is apparent on the mid to finish.

M: Creamy and a bit oily, though it suits the brew.

O: St. John's Island Summer Ale is a bit heavier then I'd expected, but it still drinks pretty well. I ended up having quite a few of these by the bottle too, and couldn't really have more then a few due to the beer's overall richness. Not the best beer in the St. John line up, but certainly a nice little beer I enjoyed while swimming in the Caribbean Ocean, off the shore of the Soggy Dollar Bar. (947 characters)

Clear pale gold brew, minimal head to it, hence lacing not so much. Lacking the fruit aroma that the other beers in the series have. Neutrual aroma.

Without the tropical fruit, you're just left with an unambitious average blond ale. Not much for hopping, extremely light bodied beer. You can find some of the tropics in this if you go looking for it, but compared to the other 2 beers, this one is lacking in the fruit department.

Strangely enough, this one is the least enjoyable of the 3 I've had, yet is probably the highest rated on this website of the three. My taste is diametrically opposed to everyone else's on this website as far as these beers go. (662 characters)

A: Pours a great looking golden color with a half finger head. Looks almost commercial.
S: Unremarkable in that you can smell some sweet malt and some citrus but it's very faint and not totally pleasing.
T: Its more sweet than anything else. Hints of lemon but seems to be void of hops to balance the sweetness.
M: light bodied and finishes sweet. Not much else.
D: It would be a session beer on vacation. Very light, a decent enough taste and small abv. (454 characters)

A BOTMC selection that arrived in a box at my door, can't beat that, let's give it a whirl. Popping the top one gets a whiff of lemongrass and citrus. The brew pours to a golden yellow with some brightness and a multi sized two finger head. On the taste the lemony flavor is even more evident, it hits you up front, then there is a dull bitterness in the backgound that doesn't bite but barks. There is some spiciness like nutmeg in the background also but the lemon id predominant. Carbonation is crispy, a requirement for a light hot weather brew. Good beer for the VI and the steady heat but also steady ocean breeze. Good brew, not something I would look to again, but I wouldn't reject it if it is in the hurricane stockpile. (730 characters)

Appearance: This beer pours a nice clear amber-golden with a thin head that dissipates quickly.

Smell: Bouquet was intriguing. I picked up some banana, apple, and pear.

Taste: Something of a let down. Not what the smell promised, but good nontheless. A well-rounded beer, a little sweet but definitely not complicated. Finishes a bit dry, metallic.

Mouthfeel: Lightly carbonated; medium/light in body.

Drinkability: Very drinkable, especially in Summer, or on an Island! Looking for an Island Summer Ale? This is it. (521 characters)

Received in a BotM shipment.

Poured into a tulip pint: Translucent golden straw body with loads of fast, tiny bubbles & a thin, creamy but loose head. Leaves a spot of lacing.

Clean, mild fruitiness like apricot or peach, just a tiny bit of bitterness & a subtle musty or mineral character. Not bad, just not a lot going on here.

Gains a round sweetness in the taste, like bubblegum or white bread. Again, pretty subtle, but it's there. After the first little pop of "wow" from this component, it turns appropriately bitter & dry, ending crisp & lager-like.

Light-bodied, crisp, with just a little snap in the finish.

Nothing bad here, but it's kind of limp, nothing really outstanding save for that initial sweetness in the taste, which goes away after a few sips anyway. Not a bad picnic or beach beer, but I can think of better options in this regard, too, so why bother? (880 characters)

Surprisingly decent, after the execrable mango version.

Pours a golden yellow. About two inches of white foam.

Smells surprisingly tropical. Some mango (but not the horrible chemical overload of the other beer by them), some yeastiness ... is that pine hops? Just a touch.

Taste is yeasty grain sweetness. A bit of fruit content, but not too much. It's a pretty mild brew.

Surprised by how much I dug it. Maybe I was just in the mood. (438 characters)

Bottle from BotMC. Not a very impressive beer.

A: Pours golden with a nice head. Head fades quickly with no lacing.

S: Nice smell - some lemon/coriander.

T: Rather plain. The smell left me expecting more, but unfortunately the beer did not deliver. Pale american lager. Somewhat acidic. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

M: Moderate carbonation.

D: Fairly drinkable, probably because it's light and plain.

An OK beer after mowing the lawn, but I really can't recommend it for much more. (486 characters)

A - Bright, highly carbonated, high white head that lingers.

S - Very light aroma of grass with a touch of hops. What is there is good, it is just hardly there.

T - Pale malt, some grain, touch of citrus from hops all good...then ends with a slight metallic twang. The flavor are not bad, it is just too bad they don't jump out more.

M - Light body, finishes clean.

D - Nothing memorable, comes across a bit weak, but on the other hand it is not offensive and is refreshing. (478 characters)

A - brilliantly clear straw color with a thick white head that settles into a thick collar; very pretty

S - grainy malt with a noble hop aroma

T - strong grainy malt flavor up front and through the finish which has an abrupt, crisp hop bitterness; hops add a lemon-like dimension to the flavor; yeast esters are present but restrained

M - medium-light body, moderately high carbonation

D - This is a decent American blonde that is nicely balanced between the malt and hop. It's very clean and refreshing - quite a nice beer on this hot summer day. The body could stand to be a little lighter to style, but it still goes down easily (635 characters)

Appearance: Crystal Clear. huge head. Best part of this beer.

Smell: Nothing. I mean nothing noticeable here.

Taste: Not too bad. good balance between hop and malt flavors. Slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied.

Drinkability: This would be excellent on the beach. I think it suits its market as well as those heat loving houstonians such as myself! (358 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Sam Adams pint glass. Poured a clear golden amber color with a thin white head barely covering the top of the beer. The head all but disappeared after a minute or so.

The aroma has a a sweet grainy and slightly bready smell to it, with a bit of citrus coming through as well. The taste shows the sweet grainy flavor found in the nose. A little tart fruitiness comes through a bit in the finish as well. Some citrus and a little bitterness help it from becoming too sweet. Not overly exciting flavors but not bad either. Pretty smooth and light, but not really refreshing either.

The mouthfeel is light and carbonation is moderate. Drinkability is average, it wasn't bad but not very good either. The flavors were average and overall it just didn't have that refreshing summer ale type of quality to me. (839 characters)

Thanks to BMan1113VR for providing this bottle.

Pours a semi-hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is similar to an adjunct lager with some corn notes. The flavor is more of the same with some grain. Thin mouthfeel with medium carbonation. (250 characters)

Virgin Islands Summer Ale....

Appearance-pale color with a thin white head which quickly dissapears.

Smell-light grain, some malt and hop does appear, thin.

Taste/Mouthfeel-the malt and hop flavors and reminiscent of summer ales but this is somewhat thinner, I can taste the alcohol, sweet with a mix of grain, medium bodied and goes down ok. Not memorable.

Drinkability-if this beer is meant to be drank on the islands perhaps that is why they made it lighter? Not sure.

Overall-simply not a memorable version of the style, other than the fun of drinking it on the Virgin Islands this simply doesn't do it for me. Not recommended. (637 characters)

Bottle: Poured a bright golden color ale with a large foamy white head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of light sweet malt with some bland cereal. Taste is not overly complex with some lightly sweet malt with a somewhat refreshing taste of cereal and a light dry hops at the end. Body is fuller then average with OK carbonation. Not bad but nothing too write home either. (388 characters)

Pours a clear golden color with thick foamy head and good lacing.

The scent is of grain and lemon/citrus.

The taste consists of mostly lemon/citrus, some very faint hops, much too watery.

Light bodied and crisp feel with moderate carbonation

This is pretty easy to drink, but really not for me. I thought it was too watery and much more to be desired. (355 characters)

Pours a nice golden color with a white, one-finger head into my fluted tulip.

Aroma is full of sweet malt with a light hint of citrus in the nose. Light and airy.

Taste is light with a decent amount of hop bitterness and sweet malt. Pretty straightforward and dare I say, bland.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering sweet malt with a bit of butter/toffee as well.

When Alan Pugsley talks about his success as a contract brewer, does he even realize that some of the beers he cranks out are god-awfully bland? Can't totally be his fault but he should find clients that aim to produce beer other than the average blonde ale/pale ale variant. (638 characters)
