"Borrowed" this bottle from the in-laws fridge, hadn't seen it in the market yet which is odd for me, they bought it at Whole Foods. The bottle says it brewed by Shipyard for St Johns, that's promising.

Pours a muddled orangish-amber with a small white head. The nose is very familiar... I can't place it. It may be similar to Pyramid Apricot or just a generic sweet fruity beer smell.

Odd flavor... the smell is sweet the taste is not... flat and dry, very crisp... none of the piney sweetness that I love about mangos. In fact, no Mango at all. A bit of a letdown.

You can tell this started life as a decent pale ale.

To be fair I am not a fan of fruit beers, generally dislike them.

First off I am an avid coffee drinker, but I never like flavored coffee. Thus far, as a novice craft beer drinker, I have never liked a sweet fruit flavored beer. This beer is no exception, almost a drain pour. I'm struggling through it but need a chocolate cheese cake or whipped cream cake to cut it.

As benchmark, I am tasting this vs TERRAPIN TREE HUGGER ALE.

A: Fine yellow, mango flesh color, but head deflates under all that fruit juice (no surprise) 2.5
S: Smell artificial, with nothing left to the underlying beer at all. The worst of bathroom fresheners / cleaning agents. 1.5
T: Not as bad as the smell but below average. Starts as the faux mango smell, a bit of beer flesh, and then the finish might as well be mango soda. 2.25
M: Thin, flat, teeth on edge 2
O: Skip this. 2 (Poor, as it pour this on your compost or flowers - dilute it first)

Gets the honor of my lowest rated beer.

Bottle > Mason Pint

A - Clear light gold in color with a thin layer or fizzy white head.
S - Fruit cocktail and clorox
T - Soapy bitter weird artificial fruit flavor. Atrocious.
M - Dry and acrid.
O - This is garbage and should be drain-poured at every given occasion.

Pours a bright yellow-gold color with a nice white head. Moderate lacing. Mango/apricot fruit dominates the aroma with a malt backing. Taste is refreshing and makes a great summer beer. Front and mid is apricot as expected. Mouthfeel is disappointing - not enough carbonation or bite. The fruity flavor fades in the finish and transitions to a bland malt with some hop bitterness. Overall a good beer, but could be much better with more carbonation and flavor complexity.

St. John Tropical Mango Ale is a nice fruit ale with a strong mango flavour. Maybe it's the salty air, but I like it!

A: Yellow colour and an excellent 5 mm head that lasts really well. 4.5

S: Nie mango-y aroma. Yum. 4.5

T: Nice mild grainy base with farily strong mango flavours over the top. The finish is clean with some slight bitterness. 4

M: 4

O: 4
