Style | ABV
Märzen / Oktoberfest |  5.30% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Bottom fermentation, medium full and medium bitter whole malt beer. Vienna lager and Bavarian Märzen were the inspiration for its composition. The color is closer to Märzen and the bitterness closer to Vienna lager. Märzen, Czech March beer, used to be cooked in March, which is still rather cold. Nowadays we have mechanical cooling and, therefore, we cook amber all year round.

Bottle picked up at brewery , amber, clear, small off-white head, decent lace.

Smell is caramel, herbal, some peanut butter hops.

Taste is also malty Marzen goodness with a firm hop snap. Clean, quick finish.

Mouthfeel is dry, crisp but rounded, medium light bodied

Drinkability is pretty good. I appreciate the firm bitterness, although it's odd that the base beer is not that sweet.

Klašterní Pivovar Strahov Amber Lager
on tap at the brewery, 31.12.2013; .4l mug for 59 Kč (@$3.12)
5.3% abv, 13˚Plato, unfiltered - based on a combination of a Bavarian Märzen and a Vienna lager

Appearance: Hazy, deep amber colored body beneath an ample head of frothy off-khaki foam. The menu states that its color is supposedly closer to that of a Märzen but I think the yeast makes it appear darker, more like a Vienna lager.

Smell: Malty sweet with a hint of golden caramel, a suggestion of darker caramel, and some very nice floral hops.

Taste: The flavor is exactly as the aroma suggests it will be. It's a bit sweetish with a very charming caramel-accented maltiness, yet somehow it manages to finish dry - very nice! The hops come through nicely, perhaps adding a bit of grassiness, and maybe earthiness (but that might be coming from the darker malts as well). Median bitterness, wrapped in malt. Balanced, but leaning towards maltiness until the drying finish where the bitterness and the hops re-emerge.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Creamy-smooth. Delicate, median carbonation appears as if it were naturally conditioned.

Overall: Surprisingly good. I thought the specialty beers would be better, but in the end if I were to sit outside and have a few beers on a lazy afternoon I might go for this one.

On-tap at Klašterní Pivovar Strahov, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is clear light amber in color and poured with a finger high beige head.
S: There are aromas of pale and toasted malts as well as floral hops in the nose.
T: The taste is bittersweet - it has a mild amount of bitterness from the hops and notes of malty sweetness. There are also some hints of caramel.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is quite easy to drink and is rather sessionable.

Amber color, quite hazy in appearance. Beige head, beautiful on the top, a bit bubbly on the sides. Decent.
At the smell a goo maltiness, a bit of caramel, and a good amount of hop, and dry flowers.
At the taste agai a good maltiness, but not too much, with a good hop againm again dry flowers, hay, camomile notes.
Good balance.
In the aftertaste a quite strong bitterness, right here.
Fresh, drinkable, balanced. Good beer.

Here was a beer that was good enough for me to experience twice during my short trip to Prague. Simply known as Sv. Norbert Amber, it did not have a "style" noted, but INHO, came closest to a Marzen.

This is brewed at the Strahov Monastery in Prague and served at the Klašterní Pivovar A Restaurace.

Presented in a ball-like mug, it has a cloudy amber color. The light head dies quickly and leaves little lace. The smell is predominately hoppy, but in a mild, floral way.

The liquor is rich and thick with a generous amount of spritzy carbonation. The solid malt base is cut by a generous amount of hop bitterness--more than any other Czech beer I've had so far (but still far less than an English/American ale).

This was my favorite beer in Prague.
