Notes/Commercial Description:
First beer we have cooked here after many years of break. Its origins reach back to Munich from the first half of the 19th century. Our St. Norbert tastes dryer and bitterer than the Munich lager. Whole malt well hopped beer, showing the Munich, caramelized and roasted malt in its taste.

Bottle picked up at the Monastery and consumed a few days later. Color is dark brown, almost black, with a small light tan head leaving decent lace.

Smell is pretty intense, caramel and molasses, a little sweet grape.

Taste is rich, sweet grape again, much like the esters in a Belgian, but with some chary roast, really like an export stout, which I'm loving.

Mouthfeel is slippery, dry, medium plus.

Drinkability is pretty high for me, as this really tasted like a Belgian stout, which I enjoyed. Atypical of other dark largers I had in Prague though with the sweetness that had an estery character.

Sv. Norbert Special Dark (Specialni Tmave pivo)
.25 L served in mini-stein at brewery.
Unfiltered variation on a Munich dark, with a little bit drier “flavor and is more bitter”. “All malt, well hopped beer."

4.5 Near opaque and black with mahogany highlights; hazy; topped by a creamy tan head that has good retention.

Aroma; a bit hard to distinguish since the brewer was checking a boil kettle only about 12 M away, releasing a fine aroma of boiled malt. Anyway, the beer itself smelt of dark malt and spicy hops.

4.5 caramel and dark malts in about equal proportion with spicy hops. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate in the finish.

M – near crisp; medium body; medium carbonation.

O – an interesting variation on a Munich dark.

On-tap at Klašterní Pivovar Strahov, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is jet black in color and poured with a two finger high dark beige head that slowly died down and left lacy patterns of bubbles on the surface. A moderate amount of carbonation is visible.
S: There are aromas of sweet malts in the nose as well as some hints of caramel.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has flavors of dark malts with notes of caramel and sweetness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer goes down smoothly and is very easy to drink. It's very sessionable and I could easily have more than one in a single sitting.

The color is dark, very dark, with a cream colored head, two finger, quite beautiful.
The taste is dark, too. Toasted malts, quite strong, a plesant roast, and a hint of hazelnut in the back. Good.
More complex taste, more characterized, and, in the end, better.
Again dark malts, some caramel, dry fruit notes, and a light coffee and chocolate in the back.
Light body, quite drinkable.
Again toasted malts in the aftertaste, and dry fruit.
Good beer.

This is brewed at the Strahov Monastery in Prague and served at the Klašterní Pivovar A Restaurace.

Near black in color with a beige head that leaves good lace. The aroma is mild (although it's difficult to measure with the lingering smoke). I can detect some dark toffee (dry, not sweet).

This is thinner than the amber version. The initial impression is coffee and cream. Lots of grainy, dark burnt malts which culminate in a very strong espresso finish. No notable hop bitterness here. Very close to a dry stout flavor.
