Our last night out in Cartagena this summer we chose to spend it at this cafe del mar-like environment.
I'd tried to enter in december, but they were hosting an event for a Bogotá nightclub, so the queue was impossible.
The place sits atop one of the parts of the fortress built by spaniards in the 17th century to protect the coastal city from invasion by sea- the largest piece of architecture Spain ever made in a colony.
The open air feel in a recluded area in Getsemaní- one of the city's most important neighbourhoods- contrasts with the heavy environment and sometimes unbearable hectic feel the old town has.
Afar, however, you can sight some of the church domes from the old town, plus the convention centre. The most beautiful sight, however, is that at perhaps half a mile lies the fortress of San Felipe, keystone in the defence of the town in old times.
We sat at a tall table with some modern, chic chairs, but we might as well have sat on the sofas. the layout is relaxing, pleasant, yet tropical- fantastic.
Excellent service, maybe because this wasn't the best of seasons for tourism. i can only hope december is this good, but it probably won't be.
Selection is a bit sad, limited to their four beers and the scarce availability in cartagena (paradoxically, one of the most important ports in Colombia).
Food is fantastic, we tried the squid with coconut sauce and the shrimp with lemon-ginger sauce which were fantastic.
the beers at palos de moguer may not be the best but they're decent. and when it comes down to having a decent beer in a brilliant environment, Palos has become easily my favourite bar in cartagena (beyond cafe del mar, even). It's a must visit at a good price. I'm glad i finally came to the decision to go there.
