During the lengthy British colonization of India, English brewers quickly discovered that by adding more hops the beer could survive the voyage; so the strongly hopped India Pale Ale was born. The hops deliver the flowery aroma and intense bitter flavor that last on the palate. This one goes out to everyone who plays on the rocks.

I tried this one with some trepidation since the only reviewer of the Brewing Co. said that he couldn't drink it. I was really surprised by the pleasant aroma of hops while the beer was still in the server's hand.

The beer poured a clear copper color with a large, long-lasting head and huge lacing. The hops aroma dominates the nose but is accompanied by a nice citrus smell. This is confirmed by the taste, which is a hop chorus with a few notes of citrus, and a little sweet fruit that balances the bitter.

It is very cleansing on the palate, medium-bodied and generally quite refreshing. This is a well-crafted IPA that could compete with most brewed in the US. It definitely had me wanting more than one so I did.

Couldn't get this one the last time I was in Jasper to ski - thankfully they have it now as I pass through town on the way to some BC sunshine...

This beer appears a hazy medium straw colour, with one finger of thick creamy white head, which leaves some chunky lace around the glass as it recedes. It smells of bitter grapefruit and pine oil hops, and some mild caramel and biscuit malt sweetness. The taste is a grapefruit/orange citrus volley up front, followed by some lemon, biscuity caramel malt, and a floral, earthy essence. The carbonation is on the low side of moderate, the body full and creamy, and it finishes with a further dance of strong citrus hops and a more reserved biscuit maltiness.

Good 'n hoppy, and skewed that way, just how I like 'em.

Review entered from notes taken late August.

Hazy orange with a thin ivory head. Decent retention but the pint was filled quite high leaving only a little room for the head. Good lacing as it goes.

Strong orange zest to the aroma. Has a sweetness to it that is surprising and pleasant.

Very forward mandarin orange flavour. From sweet to bitter across the palate orange dominates. Lingering citrus rind. Somewhat one-dimensional, but good.

Body is on the lighter side for the style, and the carbonation is lowish much like the pilsner I had. Mouthfeel doesn't hurt the beer, but it isn't a strong point.

This is a reasonable take on an IPA. I'd have it again.

A: Slightly hazy (but more on the clean side) straw / gold coloured pour. Creamy white head retains well, approx. 1 finger tall.

S: Floral and subtle piney hops. Not coming across as a hopbomb, but pretty nice.

T + M: Similar to the aroma - flower petal and pine notes. A dash of citrus - grapefruit. Not explosive, but a noted hoppiness. A little earthy, coming out more on the finish. Finish lasts a while. Crisp carbonation, rather clean finish.

D: A tasty enough brew.. enjoyable enough that I'd happily have another. ABV of about 5.5 makes that possible - a good session candidate.

Easy to find in Jasper, and well worth seeking out. Their Rockhopper IPA was markedly above-scale as far as brewpubs go. This hefty 6.4% ipa is full on with magnificent west-coast hop aroma. But what really made the difference is the use of these to create a rich aroma without the astringent bitterness sometimes i find in NA ipas. No, this lends exceptional drinkability. The beer was poured well, and literally bursted with all sorts of fragrant herbal hoppiness. Highly recommended. Surpassed my expectations. And we got the growler to go, in an etched growler bottle. Lovely little brew to be found in the heart of this crown of the Alberta Rockies. Exceptional scenery from Lake Louise to Jasper. It helps to have a solid IPA at the end of the road.
