Wow, indeed! I must review in total support of my BA colleague's earlier postings (ColoradoBobs & Bierman9). Traveled to Ettal on a totally schön September day 2008, accompanied by family (a brother, sister and niece). This Bräustüberl emanates atmophere in a location the entire area of which is sublime, really.
After gaining mighty thirst & hunger visiting earlier Linderhof palace and now Ettal monastery, I was really looking forward to a visit here - I'd known of this place for a while, yet surprisingly hadn't checked out any reviews of it before hand (only taday - hence my input).
We sat inside in the large common restaurant on the right side of the entry way. (I did take a quick peek into several of the other rooms too - all exceptional).
Quickly had two fantastic Hefeweizen beers followed by two more enjoyably awesome Curator Doppelbocks. A new favorite doppel to go along with Andechser and Ayinger. And the food, we all very much agreed, was more than a bit above average and very tasty. Some of the highlights were the cheese soup, Wienerschnitzel, local sausage plate and cheese-filled croquettes (yummy)! Then, the Apfelstudel was divine, mounted atop a dosing of sweet Eierlikör (an egg-cream liquor with a bit of alcoholic bite!). My sister shared some with her coveted hot chocolate.
There is also a take-out shop adjacent. Went inside and purchased some local mountain-herd cheeses (superb!) and Ettaler monastery schnapps samples.
Hope to one day return back this way!

Oh my gosh! ATMOSPHERE!!! This is quintessential Bavarian tastefulness and bier culture at its best. The place is simply outrageously gorgeous. You sit outside, across the street from what may be the most stunningly beautiful monastery on earth, with beautiful mountains behind, and up walks this lovely blond Mädchen in the typical old-fashioned dirndl and asks for your order, and you're tempted to say, "Yes, may I please just sit here for about ten years and drink in this place. I never want to leave."
Honestly, though the Kloster Ettal biers are really pretty good (though not nearly as good as Andechs), the thing about this place is that it's right out of a painting: everything is exactly as it should be in small-town Bavaria.
If you're ever in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, it's worth your time to make the 15 mile trip up the hill northeast to this indescribably beautiful spot. They make an above-average Hefeweizen and a good Doppelbock, but they make some of the best atmosphere on the planet. Go there!

After briefly touring the grounds of the nearby Kloster Ettal, BAs BierManVa, GenCornwallis and I stopped here for a bier and to lax...
We didn't sit inside, though the numerous rooms I espied were fantastically appointed, exuding loads of Gemütlichkeit. We parked outside, at one of the many small tables. Some were under umbrellas, others sun-drenched, and ours on the edge of some large, shady trees. Very relaxing, considering the lovely buildings nearby as well as the awesome German Alps hovering overhead...
Our waittress was friendly and attentive, in a proper, German way. We had the run of about 6 Ettaler biers here. I quaffed a Dunkelweizen, while BMVa and The General each had an Ettaler Curator Doppelbock plus a Helles... There was also a Hefeweizen, Pils and... ?? I forget....
Though Ettal is not on a rail-line, it is only 10 minutes by bus from nearby rail town Oberau in southern Bavaria. I'd love to park my butt here for a few days and just take in the awesome beauty of the mountains and the Kloster Kirche, all the while enjoying some great Ettal bier!
