This is a great beer bar. Not easily located; you have to keep your eyes peeled for the narrow lane that runs between the buildings on the short Briedalstraat that links Markt to Burg. This is one of the busiest tourist streets in Bruges, but thankfully most people never notice this little lane. I say thankfully, because we need to keep space in the pub for people like us!
We visited on Sunday 22nd May 2005 at about 4pm (we had tried the day before, but no room). We found seating upstairs which was a non-smoking area, but the drinks are still brought to your table. Excellent extensive beer menu and I had the De Garre (house) Tripel which is served in its unique glass. There are only about 30 seats upstairs, but it is a lovely atmospheric room with nice classical music playing. The beer was served with a little helping of cheese. It was somewhat dearer than some nearby pubs, but well woth it. Don't miss it!

NOTE: Revisited on April 1st 2006. Glad to report that the same high standard maintained. The 2 beers on tap (other than the house tripel) were Gulden Draak and Witte van Celis.

Amazing little bar that will take you away from the bustle of tourists, and let you slow down to drink a glass of Belgium's finest. Went in the middle of the day (mid February), and it wasn't crowded at all. Plenty of beers to choose from, but I--like others--would definitely recommend the house tripel. Great experience, and it'll be my first stop the next time I'm in town.

The highlight of any Bruges visit. Amazing bar, set deep in a hidden alley. A few high quality beers on tap, none of which can compare to their house tripel. Get it. Several times. Buy a magnum, too. They don't sell the glasses, so don't be a dick and steal one. They literally count them and will chase you down if they notice one missing from your table. Not worth it. Just go and enjoy one of the most amazing places in the world of beer.

Not to give up on our quest to discover new beer adventures in Bruges, we went searching for Staminee De Garre. This was in one of Chris' guidebooks as an old pub on the smallest street in Bruges. They are known for having a special De Garre tripel that is made for them and only available at the pub, which prompted our quest. We wandered in circles around and around a large block looking for the place with the aid of a paper map and two different mapping apps on our cell phones. When we were about to give up, one of our group managed to get the directions from a cranky chocolatier (that likely gets this request often) and we were off around the block again! The opening to the "street" is really a tiny alley that looks like a store front entrance, truly a hidden little place. Walking into this street, I felt like I had just been transported to Diagon Alley or perhaps Platform 9 3/4 from Harry Potter. Very strange. The pub within instantly transported us to a lost time.

The special De Garre beer was served in an enormous bowl glass that looked more suitable to goldfish than a drink! We initially requested to share one, but that is not allowed, so we were all served a smaller and easier to handle version of the glass. The beer was 11% ABV, but dry and drinkable with a slightly sharp finish, and was served with a small bowl of cheese cubes. This place is fun and well worth the effort to find it!

If you go to Bruges, you have to visit the Garre.
I was born in Bruges and worked in touristic center of Bruges for 10 years.
This place and his atmosphere is one of the best in Bruges, also the prices.
Not everyone will like the house beer but the menu gives you a range of very good belgian beers.
Service is very good.

We have visited this place like 13 times now. Service is slow even for Europe. I learned to order 3 tripels and just let them stare.

last time was March 2013
No smoking now upstairs.

Rewriting this a little. We have been here 10 times over the last few years, and we had visited long ago in the late 90's.

ok 1 bad expereince:

Last visit got beer downstairs in early April 2008, the downstairs was packed (and so smokey you could not see across the room)and we had no choice but to head upstairs. We got up there and drank what we had and even got another 1, but this was while a family, who knows who, but locals I am sure, were eating lunch! i did not think about at the time, but this had happened before at lunch time, and I only remembered after looking at pictures we have. Anyway after they left and the guy cleaned up we got abandoned. I mean we sit up an hour and no 1 came, but they sure did want the cash when I went downstairs. LOL but the place was still packed so we left.

Still if you do not smoke stay away if smoke bugs you.

So I say go for the de garre tripel but there are much better places in Bruges, now things change some if you go in the Off seasons, and in winter well things are really different.
So while I still say its a must see, I say if your there in MAY thru September avoid the place in the daytime.

Garre go there or miss out.

of course the tripel is the draw other wise you can get most of the same beer anywhere in Belgium. No food normally but the cheese is damn good.
