Draft at Foxfire Grille, Snowshoe Mountain, WV. Has a fairly grapefruity hop aroma with a dash of roasted coffee thrown in. The body is dark brown to black and the finger sized tan head fades immediately. Fore is grapefruit and mild roast. Thin body. Sort of a black pale ale, but not a particuarly good pale ale....and a fairly crappy stout.

Mountain State Oatmeal Stout
Had fresh, in a mason jar, at the brewery.
A: pours pitch black with very little head. The mason jar probably isnt helping with head retention... 3.0
S: Roasted Malts present but a bit "watery". Not the strong nose that I like. 3.0
T: roasted malts present, but not overpowering. Bitterness on the back end keeps this beer balanced. Oatmeal flavor can be hard to find... 3.0
M: thin and light. A bit watery. 2.5
D: reasonable. Would have another, but not if better options were present. 3.0

Had this on tap at a restaurant in Harper's Ferry. Was excited to try some new WVA beer in a style I dig.
Poured black with a moderate creamy tan head that stuck around for a while. Minimal lacing, but a nice looking beer.
Aroma was my favorite part of the brew. Mostly sweet malt balanced with toasty grains, with just a hint of grass and spice.
Flavor was balanced roastiness, a little malt sweetness and appropriate bitterness - a nice stab at style. Until, oh wait, a nasty finish of cooked vegetables comes through at the end. Unfortunately, the off flavor really killed the drinkability for me.
Mouthfeel was solid, appropriate moderate chewiness, very smooth, for an oatmeal stout.
This would have been a solid brew sans the off vegetal flavors...

appearance: pours a dark black, clear and transparent brown when edges held to light, light carbonation, slight bubbly creamy foam, leaving slight ring of lacing, did not appear to be thicker or more viscous that usual.
smell: roasted malts and oat scent are light but noticeable, no discernable aromas that stand out other than that.
taste: malts are bold yet mild, toasty oats with very slight notes of coffee, the taste of the alcohol is there and the hops contribute to an adequate bitter finish.
drinkability: nothing to rave about, but for a basic oatmeal stout, it has all of the elements.

Had on tap at the brewery. Pour is dark hazy honey brown. Nose has nutty and caramel malt with a floral green hop balance. Taste is sweet, loads of caramel, lightly nutty, faint citrus, hop sweetness, herbal and green with light peppery spice and lingering bitterness. Body is syrupy, decent carb, fairly dry in the finish.

Reviewed from notes. Had during a stop during our drive through West Virginia.
Pours very dark with a slight tan head. The nose brings some slightly-roasted malt and a little bit of chocolate. The taste is mostly roast and doesn't bring too much else. A bit dry and overly bitter from the roast. Drinkability is good enough, but this is a bit one dimensional and doesn't hit the right spots.

Review from notes taken 2/6/11. On tap at the brewpub (Maryland location) served in a pint. Appears dark brown with a creamy finger of tan head that recedes quickly leaving patchy lace on the glass. When held to the light, it displays clarity and lighter brown around the edges.
The aroma is quite muted but has a light roast character. A bit of chocolate malt and coffee tones are evident. This brew was served excessively cold and even once it was warm it still was a very muted aroma.
The taste of this brew is equally light and muted when considering the lack of aroma. What does come through is lightly roasted malt with a mild bitterness. Coffee, light grain flavor. Mild citrus hop flavoring towards the back. Lingering grain aftertaste.
Medium bodied and modestly carbed. A little watery in the feel and lacking that typical oat smoothness. Regardless fairly drinkable and completely fits the bill of this brewery's description: Light crafted ales served in an area that drinks light beer.

On tap at the grill in Snowshoe. Pours black. Aroma was toasted malts and bread with some hops in the background. Body was somewhat watery for a stout, but very smooth. Flavor of bitter-sour hops balanced by toasted malts with a long coffee finish. Quite average brew but at least drinkable.

Growler from brewery. Pours a black with a very small light-brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some chocolate, coffee, oatmeal and slightly nutty. Flavor is of coffee and oatmeal, but is fairly watery. Good beer, very drinkable but not a great stout.

A: dark beer, little bit of reddish brown at the edges, so not quite midnight black. The head is large, at least 2 fingers, and light tan. There is a fair amount of lacing as well.
S: Not much of an aroma on this beer. A little bit of roasted malts, but that's about it.
T: The flavor is quite toasty and light. Roasted malts, a light chocolate flavor.
M: Not as creamy as one would expect from an oatmeal stout. Body is moderate, with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: More porter than stout, and not the creaminess one would expect from an oatmeal stout. That being said, it has a decent amount of flavor, and the relatively light body is a nice change. It almost resembles a doppelbock. Better than the sum of its parts.
