I'm not big on this style, mainly because I have had many bland and uninteresting offerings made by American craft brewers (with a few exceptions, most notably the Harpoon Octoberfest which is excellent). I am psyched to review not only a German version but also what I have heard is one of the best made.
A - Medium amber color with a one finger light tan head that disappeared quickly. Neither too light nor too dark, this is a good looking Märzen.
S - Very fresh smelling with roasted malts, hops, and caramel. Has a dark fruity aroma to it and a touch of sweetness/brown sugar.
T - Very bready and fruity (raisin?) with a touch of herbal hop bite at the end. Everything here is balanced perfectly. Hints of spices (nutmeg) and a nuttiness that is very tasty. "Liquid sweetbread" is an excellent description. Caramel/toffee is also present as it warms.
M - Medium body and full carbonation, silky smooth mouthfeel.
D - This is the epitome of session beers and designed to be just that.
An absolute fantastic representation of the style and blows away any American offering I have had. This is one of the pioneers that has been around for hundreds of years. Worth the price tag and blows the competition away. So glad I finally got my hands on some! This has inspired me to seek out other German Märzen offerings, because so far from what I have tried the micros from America don't even compare.

12oz bottle into a frozen mug.
A - Beautiful, crystal clear dark, autumnal amber. Pretty white head that dissipates quickly, leaving little lace.
S - Typical fresh "hay field" smell of a well-crafted euro-lager. Not special, just lagery goodness. Would love to smell a bit more crystal in this one.
T - The taste of any world class lager with some extra caramel and honey notes. The hop bitterness comes out a little more as it warms up.
M - A bit dry, especially at the end, but crisp and refreshing.
O - What a great lager! I'd only had Sam Adams Oktoberfest before this and I thought it was pretty darned good and looked forward to it every Autumn. This was just such an incredibly better Oktoberfest beer. Paulaner Oktoberfest is available at my bottleshop year round and it's going to be a trial to make myself wait until Autumn to buy it.
