I love Octoberfest beer. Something magical happens when this combination of beer perfection comes together. I have yet to have a particular brand of octoberfest beer that I would not consider having another. That being said, Paulaner is up to bat.
Appearance: brilliant copper/red, light lacing that slides down the glass, light head but seemingly more carbonation than the head lets on.
Smell: wonderful malt, slight hops, nothing really punches me in the nose tho. It's subtle, which is nice but it's still subtle compared to, say, Sam Adams Octoberfest.
Taste: is spot on. light, malty like expected. less complex than most other Octoberfest offerrings, but there's something to be said for simplicity. This beer has a odd (not unpleasant) sugary feel in the back of the throat about 20 seconds after swallow. Like a halloween treat for adults!
Mouth is nice, balanced, not too light, not too heavy but definitely has some guts to it. It is like drinking silk, if you can imagine what that would be like. Again, that subtle sugary feel after swallowing. It's almost warming, but not like a booze warming.
Drinkability is good to me, like most octoberfest offerrings. It really is my favorite style of beer when the weather gets cool. A nice crisp night and a great octoberfest. this one definitely applies. The style in general is drinkable so I rate it very drinkable with not too much dryness or sweetness.

Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen – Märzen (5.8%) – Paulaner (Germany)
App: Pours an absolutely clear amber brown with a one finger white head that dissipates quickly leaving a soapy ring of foam and minimal lacing up the glass. Pretty standard looking.
Smell: Sligtht breadiness with some high buttery aromas. Light hints of caramel and molasses. Deep grain aromas typical of darker lagers. Dark honey like sweetness as beer warms.
Taste: Essentially follows nose with considerably more intensity. Sweet overall with massive honey, molasses, and burnt sugar flavors. Malts are slightly bready overall with a definitive grain taste. Hops are hidden behind sweetness and only reveal themselves in the aftertaste which turns a sweet fore and true taste into a pleasantly balanced after taste that is clean and crisp. Raw wort comes through a lot, as the lager yeast doesn't muck it up. Fairly light and drinkable overall, but very well balanced.
Mouth: Medium to medium-heavy for the style. Thick, but doesn't cling to the palate. Carbonation is medium-heavy as well and makes for a very refreshing brew.
Home tasting, 11.2oz bottle into Tulip. 2/7/14
