Presentation: 500ml brown pop top, very German-themed label, with clearly-marked best by date of July 2012.
Appearance: Poured into a dimple stein, this pours a medium copper hue, sligtly hazy, with a nice dark ivory cap which fades too quickly for my taste.
Smell: Lots of sweet dark fruit up front with a decent toasty Munich background. Nice, but rather two-dimensional, with not a lot of depth.
Taste: Light notes of toasty Munich malt, hints of sweet cherry and red licorice, and a bit of warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, bordering on full.
Overall: Tasty, dirt-cheap at between $2.00 and $2.50, and readily available. Oh yeah, and the best-by dates are clearly marked (unusual for European imports). That being said, there's not a ton of depth here, just some toasty Munich, dark red fruit, and a hint of nuttiness. I'd rank this a solid B and perhaps, considering the price point, even up to a B+. I'd definitely pick this up now and again.
