Appearance: Pours a regal-looking reddish-amber with crystal clarity. A light tan head starts strong, goes down quite a bit, but comes back easy with a simple swirl of the glass.
Smell: Sweet caramel, toffee, and a touch of smoke. Great aroma on this brew...very intoxicating.
Taste: Complex with flavors of toffee and caramel coming through the strongest. Very powerful malt backbone, with only a touch of hops, which show up on the tail-end. As with the smell, there's a faint smoky flavor that accentuates the malt very well.
Mouthfeel: Medium thickness, with an oily, slick mouthfeel. Very warming and comforting...really opens up as it warms.
Drinkability: Good for a 7.5%abv brew. This is the kind of beer I buy by the bottle, as a six-pack would be overkill. In front of a roaring fireplace is where this beer shines. Doppelbocks are supposed to be spring beers, but I think they are more suited to winter weather.
A true classic, and the world's first doppelbock. If you want to learn about them and how they should taste, you should start here and then move on to others. A consistently fantastic beer.
