This unfiltered bottom fermented double bock beer has been brewed for over 375 years--always adhering to the original recipe. The taste is unmistakable, with its smooth chocolate flavor, robust dark caramel maltiness and a light note of hops--providing a nice intensity on the palate.

Golden red in appearance, some bubbles. Whitish smallish head, lasting, good lacing. Malty aroma, earthy dark fruit aromas. Grape. Fresh taste, lively, woody, dark fruit on the aftertaste. Some alcohol, smooth balanced flavor, not real malty. Letting it warm up a bit...a little more malty flavor, but still well balanced. Some taste of flowers. Overall not too bad a beer. One of my first dopplebocks, so not sure what to look for.

I lived in Germany for a time and never drank this while there. I have a feeling I'm gonna wish I had. Paulaner is one of the best breweries in the world, legendary actually, and I just adore their Hefe Weisen. Can't wait to dig into their Salvator Double Bock! Here we go. Stored at room temperature and chilled to around 45-50 degrees F before pouring. Poured into a Belgian glass as I would a Belgian Trappist ale...slow pour straight in the middle of an upright glass. No 45 degree stuff. Poured nice with an off-white 1-finger head. Looks beautiful and very inviting. Head dissipated quicker than most. Good carbonation initially that slows down after the pour and head dissipation. Beautiful. It is not bottle conditioned, so we get a nice clear, cherry, mahogany color. On the aroma, I'm getting a lot of biscuit, wheat bread, nuttiness, and some malty sweetness with a little bit of dried fruits like raisin and maybe dried plum and apricot. This aroma is quite intense and I'm very excited to dig in, but I sense this is a complex beer so I'm trying to find more on the aroma. Yeah, just a very intense grainy wheatness and nuttiness and complemented by the malty sweetness. Smells wonderful. On the first sip, wow. Holy cow, this is so good. Right down my alley. It is very obvious Paulaner went out of their way to use the highest quality malts for this beer. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not drinking this when in Germany. This is incredible...nutty, bisquity, grainy deliciousness. So rich in flavor. Up front all of that grainy goodness, mid-palate the sweet raisins and a bit of dried apricot come through to balance it all, and on the backend the sweetness disappears and I pick up the very mild bitterness from the hops. My goodness. I love this! It is obvious the monks had something to do with this recipe over 300 years ago. I'm not putting this on a Rochefort 10 level, but it is right up there even though a different style. The mouthfeel is nice...moderate smoothness and balanced. The more I drink it, the more I feel the 7.9 ABV. My tummy is nice and warm, and that warmth crawls up my chest. The final sips I feel it on the tongue, too. Whatever you do, don't session this one. You'll be crawling home. This is a special, fantastic beer and I'm surprised it is only getting an 88 here. To me, this is world-class. If you're into traditional malty brews, this is a must try. You won't regret it!

Once again, Paulaner delivers! Salvator double-bock.....pours darker as most will. The taste is different as there is hints of chocolate to this beer. As only Paulaner can do, another GREAT BEER.

Smells like the rich earthiness of fermenting silage. Drinks like the most balanced doppelbock I've encountered.

Bottle dated "enjoy before 06/24" into pint glass. Pours a hazy dark copper color with a miniscule off-white head. Initial impression is bready malts; quite sweet but not cloying. Mouthfeel is clean and has a bit of heft to it. Finish fades to malt sweetness. Overall, quite enjoyable.

51 cL bottle, fridge cool, poured into a snifter, in Toulouse, France.
My son hand delivered this from a trip he took to Germany. It was bottled *2 weeks ago*, but has been brewed in Bavaria for *390 years*. 4 ingredients.,.
Good caramel head sponge above a chestnut body. No lace, but a perceptable oil remains in the glass.
Nose is solid; malty, bready, with high caramel notes, some dark fruits present.
Taste leads with the malt and caramel, dark fruit sweetness, then the hop hits. Dry finish and a smiling alcohol hit. Beautiful.
Mouth is medium-full, it’s low carbonation, which suits the beer exactly.
Overall, style point for freshness and mode of delivery. A superbly nice drinking double bock.
I’ll have another!

Always one of my favorites this dark golden brown beer has a beautifully thin tan head and a robust cloudiness that anticipates the flavors to follow. Deep and malty on the nose with dark chocolate leading aromas of caramel, toffee, cocoa powder and maybe a hint of light roast coffee following. On the palette we are treated again to the dark chocolate and an unmistakable bread backbone. Crispy caramelized bacon along with molasses round out the malty flavors and the low carbonation makes this strong doppelbock easy to drink. The feel of this beer is very full and warms you like being wrapped in a fleece blanket laying on the couch during Sunday Night Football in mid December. A true classic this robust beer shows why it has been enjoyed for nearly 400 years.

Interesting cloudy copper color. Malty, roasty, cocoa. Caramel licorice. Dry on the mouth feel. Hop bitterness is nice. Glad to have tried this one!

i have wanted to try this beer for ages, last year while visiting a friend in hamburg i even bought a bottle, only to leave it in their fridge and forget it, but now i finally get to try it, bought in the edeka in hamburg hbf, this is a good not great doppelbock, rich, chewy malty flavour, black bread, burned toast, liquorice, tobacco, chocolate, caramel sweetness, hint of a fruity flavour, light bitterness on the finish, medium to full bodied, low carbonation, was hoping for a little better after all this time, but nice to finally get to try it

Pours a brownish copper with a finger of head. The nose has bready notes and also the essence of molasses. The flavor is malty but it is not nearly as strong as I would expect for the style. The same could be said for the body - awful thin for a doppelbock. The finish is also unexpectedly hoppy.

Bottle dated best by 2/24. Not bad, but not great. Not enough head and it doesn’t last long. No lacing. darkish amber liquid with excessive suspended solids in a slight haze. (At least they warn that it is unfiltered). I wish it was darker. Caramel malt on nose and taste. Was hoping for more overt expression of dark dried fruit .the only chocolate I pick up is maybe faint milk chocolate; most likely from power of suggestion after reading the brewer notes.Mouthfeel a bit thinner than preferred.
