A: Pours an orangey copper color, slightly cloudy, with a half-finger of fairly loose cream-colored head, which pretty quickly disappears, leaving only a bit of lacing.
S: This beer was one of my first craft beer loves. In college, I'd study over pints of it at my local English-style pub. One whiff of it takes me back, and reminds me why I loved it then (and still do). Strong, sweet, malty, sugary, full in the nose, and just as I remember it. Smells like a combo of brown sugar, bread, and dark fruits. Yum.
T: Not quite as much too it as I remember. Leads with delicious sweet light caramel malts, and there are other malt flavors around it, some bready notes, but that's about all I get. Not as much complexity as I'd hoped for. Lingers in the mouth for quite a while.
M: Classic rich, chewy-but-not-thick doppelbock mouthfeel. Coats the whole mouth and stays there for a good long while.
D: I still love this beer, but it's not quite as good as I remembered it. My tastes have changed, for sure, and I think I expect more out of beers now. It's still very solid, and a top tier doppelbock, but not up there with Celebrator, for example. But I'll certainly go back for more!
