I am doing another of my not so famous live drinking tests of a beer company that introduced me into the world of real beer drinking with their Hefe-wiesen line. Unfortunately, i find the smell of this beer...just that, some kind of smell. Just smells like...well like a beer. No aroma of anything else, just a grainy beer smell. This beer pours like a mass produced beer, light golden color and a head that fades almost as soon as i poured it. Maybe im just not a "regular" beer drinker but this doesnt even taste like a liager to me. This tastes more like an "american" lager or pilsner. No where near thick, which can be a good thing since paulaner Hefe's thickness detracts a bit for me, but this is just like a light beer. No real taste at all.

I wouldnt say a BAD beer, just one that is definetly not for my taste buds.

Great German Helles lager. Found this when I was exploring various Biergartens in Munich.

12oz bottle into a pilsner glass
no bottling dates

A: Very light pale straw yellow, a few carbonation bubbles can be seen rising to the top of the glass. 1.5 fingers width of bright white head has decent retention before dissipating down, and leaves almost no lacing. 3.75

S: Floral, sweet, some hop spice, a metallic quality. 3.5

T: Hop spice, some sweetness, floral, subtle bitterness. 3.75

M/D: Light body, carbonation appropriate, very easy drinking. 3.5

O: Solid beer, but not my favorite Helles Lager. Can’t hate on a classic though. 3.75

Good malty German brew, finishes well with just enough hop spiceyness to it.Good with food, not to light but doesnt fill you up real quick either, thearomas are light, but the flavor is fuller with some substance to it,unlike to many American adjuct filled lagers.

Appearance – This one is a clear, brilliant yellow with a good, pitting head.

Smell – The big citrus sweetness stood out immediately at the nose. There are also some sharp grainy notes.

Taste – This one really smoothed out at the taste. There’s a nice mix of citrus notes and maybe something lighter, like melon or cherries, to go with the grain.

Mouthfeel – This medium-bodied Lager has some very light carbonation with a heavy creamy citrusy hit at the back of the tongue.

Drinkability – This is a good, basic, no frills lager.

A: Nice yellow pour with aclean with head and
visibly active carbonation.

S: Grassy, grainy, lemon peel flavors with under
lying tastes of alcohol and a cilo.

T: Unlike any pilsner I've had. Very good
character and suprisingly complex medley of
flavors. I like the hint of lemons and the
mental image of pasture the taste evokes.

M: A little thin but crisp with good carbonation

D: Very drinkable, one of my top two pilsners
this spring (so far)

Presentation: 12 oz European style bottle, with a drawing of Munich. They even trademarked "Original Munich."

Appearance: Light pale, yellow. Clear and fizzy with little head.

Smell: Clean, toasted, with slight hints of yeast and banana.

Taste: Blends of light, toasted malt and a smidgeon of spiced banana. Succeeded by a crisp lemon-hop finish, to cleanse the palate.

Notes: A very respected lager, and rather tasty.

Pours light yellow with a 3/4 inch head. Lacing is good. Smell is nice. Taste is light bodied, being nicely malty. German hops are present giving a nice somewhat bitter mouthfeel. This had almost a hint of skunk, but just enough to make it interesting. Finish is very smooth and crisp. This is a good beer, though lighter than a lot of German lagers.

Bottle pours a clear, golden body with a small vanilla head that falls into some delicate silky lacing. Aroma is somewhat restrained, featuring floral and spicy hops and some toasted grain. Light medium in body with a crisp carbonation. Taste is dominated by a spicy hop bitterness that is never out of check. Sweet toasty malt sweetness provides an ideal balance. Hints of golden apple fruitiness add interest. One of the most drinkable lagers in the world and a true classic.

Not bad. Nice look for a lager, but of course, the head disappears quickly upon pouring. Tastes somewhat strange at first, almost as if some kind of powder had been mixed with water. Initially, I wasn't a fan, but after a few more sips, it started to taste relatively solid.

All in all, I would say this is a pretty average lager, which came as a bit of a disappointment to me, as I had been expecting considerably more of a supposedly premium-class German lager.

This is a fine everyday beer, with light malt background, aggressive hoppy hints, and persistent rapid bubbles reminiscent of a beady pilsner. Short-lived head, yellow golden color, not much aroma. Decent with spicier foods, generally delicate but substantial and interesting enough for sustained drinking. A basic flavor - what most people think of when they think of "beer" - without the US macro chemical nastiness. Some slight travel damage is inevitable; after all, this is a pretty sensitive brew, but tasty nonetheless.

11.2 oz brown bottle with a best before date of 03/11. Poured into a pint glass.

Pours a transparent dark straw color with a one finger head that fades to nothingness. Some bubbles float up and no lacing.

Smells of grains, and a kiss of floral citrus hops. Bittersweet and inviting.

Tastes like a clean adjunct. Big grain bill in the beginning which fades to a slight hop finish. Some sweetness with the malt.

Mouthfeel is good, slight tickling and slightly wet.

Drinkable, but boring. Same as any other yellow beer. I prefer Weihenstephaner Original over this any day.

Looks like fizzy yellow pale beer, no lacing on the minimal head. Aroma of banana and clove, very muted.

More muted banana taste, pricklier feel, be it from the hops or the carbonation. Taste certainly exceeded appearance, some lemon came in. Light bodied, lightly hopped, little bitterness, but close to full flavored, a decent hot weather beer. Kind of pricey for what you get.

Very clear, pale straw color. Pilsner glass gives a generous head, bubbles are big at the side. Nose is sweet with a little nutmeg. Nutty malts with spice, typical of the style but not leaning toward a wallpaper paste as in some. A little lighter in mouthfeel and taste than a Hacker Pschorr Munchner. Clean finish with little after taste. Not a world beater but a good lager is always appreciated.

Well, I just recieved my official Paulaner half-liter mug, and man is this thing huge. I love it, to break it in I opted to select the Orginal Munich Formula, and being a big fan of the hefeweizen I had never tried the lager. I must say, this beer is great!!! It took three bottles to fill my mug, and it looks perfect the golden color and the huge thick frothy white head. That same great European lager fresh and sending nice scents of malt. Amazing, and then I took my first sip. A huge malty treat, refreshing smooth lemon grassy sweetness. An awesome beer that could take the throne as my all time favorite lager, that I've tasted.

Pours a straw gold with a bubbly white head that diminishes quickly to almost nothing. Some sweet malts in the nose, and some faint spicy hops. Biscuity malt backed by a subtle spicy hop character, with the hops only making themselves known in the lingering finish. Delicate yet complex and has a lot of character. Nice mouthfeel and very drinkable. An excellent quaffing beer.

Crystal clear and bubbly, this pale straw colored brew looks thin and mild. The head starts out strong, fizzy and white but fades quickly to a nothing collar of skinny bubbles.

Nose is very faint. Like the looks there is a very thin and mild scent to this beer. A touch of grains and not much else. It's clean but slightly disappointing because there isn't anything to it.

Taste follows the nose but has a little more character to it. It's still mild but the grain bill shows up more. It's warm and has a light roast to the grain kind of like plain white bread that has been toasted on the lowest setting.

The mouthfeel is also very clean with a light touch of bubbles and slight hop bitterness. An easy drinker that is all around above average. This one goes down easy and has some nice mild flavor to it. I can sit and drink on this one all night.

poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass

A- straw yellow with a big puffy white head tons of lacing left on the pilsner glass with every sip

S- some hops nice and light

T- very nice hops upfront with some light banana clove and bitter then clean finish very palate cleansing

M- balanced but a bit more watery than I would have liked

D- like all well done german lagers this one is a very quaffable easy drinker. Very refreshing on a hot day. There are better examples of the style but this is certainly one of Paulander's finer offerings.

A clear golden brew with a steady stream of tiny bubbbles building a snow white head. Decent lacing on the sides.

The aroma holds a whiff of grain and is perhaps mildly skunky (this was a warm shelf bargain).

A respectable lager with some symmetry- some malt and some hop tanginess. The light mouth coating at the finish is nice.

It is well made- I just like other Paulaner offerings better. The 1/2 liter bottles are, of course, very user friendly.

This poured to a nice light gold color with a very small head. It's still leaving some good lace behind, though.

Light malts are found in the fairly average smell. The taste has more of the same up front, along with a crisp and clean hop bite in the finish.

The mouthfeel is fairly light but not at all empty. The drinkability is very high. This is a quality easy drinking beer.

Pours a crisp pale yellow with a nice white head that recedes quickly but leaves good lacing. Nose is slightly skunked malt and grain. Taste follows with good grain, slight skunk, a nice hop kiss, and some good grassy finish with slight apple. Nice and crisp. Mouthfeel is good, maybe slightly thick. Drinkability is very good here, as this is certainly a good choice for a summer slammer. Good lager.

A: nice yellow, very German, good head, nice lacing too.

S: doughy yeast, German bitters

T: bit watery, tastes like it smells, doughy, got a bitter taste in there also.

M: bit of thickness in there, quite pleasant, decently carbonated, carbonation accompanies the bitters

D: very easy to drink, no offensive flavours, bit watery also

Wouldn't be one of my first preferences (would generally prefer something with more flavour, even for a basic lager) but works well for the style and is enjoyable.

A functional lager, fine for a late afternoon summer day. Straw colour, a bit of head that sizzles then fizzles. Easy simple drink, a tad spice and grassiness from yeast and malts. A basic beer, and of course I have had more exciting product from this brewery.

A - Solid yellow and clear with a thin cap of white fizz. Decent lacing, but nothing outstanding going on here.

S - Firm malt backdrop with very subtle and clean hop scents on top. Very clean and pils-like.

T - Again, very much like a German pils. Soild white cracker malts and brisk twangy hop nuances. Sort of run-of-the-mill IMO.

M - More full in body than I would have expected from a clear yellow brew. Slightly creamy, but acidic and twangy too. I would call this medium bodied.

D - Good. I could session this fo' sho'.
