What a difference a decade makes. The buy-out of Paulaner by the big Euro Conglomerates has had an effect.
This lager pours a pale yellow. A decent, thick rocky head garners the glass. A faint aroma of sweet malts can be discerned. The front end of the helles is sweet, yet not as malty as it should be. The middle remains a bit sweet, while the finish dries out. A sweet malty aftertaste remains that is a bit astringent. The body is not at all firm, and the bold yet elegant malt profile is missing altogether. I suppose some noble bittering hope were used to offset the pale lager malts, but in the past a definite hop presence was detected especially in the nose. This lager has many rough edges.
Munich Helles is a brand that is certainly losing its favour even in its hometown. Paulaner is no exception. While this beer is miles ahead of most modern lagers, Paulaner many decades ago set the bar very high. It's current state shows that it is evolving into a Euro lager. Again, not a bad beer -just a disappointing one.

The beer poured out with a light gold color, decent carbonation, and sported a thin, white head. Malty nose with a dank, wet grass note. Lightly toasted malt grain flavor with a corresponding hop bitterness to even things out. Medium-light body; slightly coarse; clean and dry finish.
Nothing exceptional leaps out at you with this beer, but it is tasty, wet, and soothing overall. There's a pleasant marriage with the light, biscuit-like graininess and rounded hop bitterness starting midway through the sip and on past the finish. Probably won't bowl you over in any manner, but most likely won't disappoint you either.
