Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in Denver, Colorado. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

12 oz. brown bottle poured into stemmed pilsner glass. On bottle's rear label is stamped 0177 82 04:54.
Appearance: cloudy tan and orange body, typical of many hefes. Large bubbles assemble at top and immediately die off. Carbonation is very active for this style.
Smell: subtle banana and wheat husks, very zesty lemons.
Taste: Twangy wheat and mildly sweet bananas, lemon rinds and finishes with hop bitterness and a metallic taste.
Mouthfeel: an overpowering twangy bitterness makes for an uneasy mouthfeel. I love hefes, but this is not just the typical wheat twang.
Drinkability: a bit surprised, it's drinkability is only hurt by this uncharacteristic bitterness. It's flavors are fine otherwise. I will try this again, assuming this is just a bad bottle.

Copper pour, limited head, minimal yeast, clove and banana nose. This is a weak version of a German hefe, and I'm frankly shocked at some of the ratings. The beer looked like slightly bubbly dishwater. Classic hefeweizen banana and clove flavor barely creeps through. Germany has nothing to worry about.

11/2/23 On tap at Pittsburgh Airport on our trip to Florida and cruise!
This hefe is very delightful and drinkable. I find this one full bodied and nicely balanced clove flavored! Excellent, Penn Brewery!

Poured from 12oz bottle to a weizen glass. Pour starts rather clear, but clouds up as sediment at bottom of bottle reaches the glass. Nice orange body with white head that falls quickly to nothing. Smell is yeast, clove, banana. A very present aroma and a pleasant one at that. Taste follows nose with banana up front, a bit of bubblegum and wheat in the middle, finish is spicy with clove dominating. Feel is light and I wish there was a bit more body and carbonation...but still a pleasant easy drinking beer. Overall, this beer hits the spot on a nice day outside. A lot of flavor and character here.

L - Poured a murky orange yellow with a half finger white head that dissipated to none in a second. No film, no lacing. The beer had a dishwater look to it unlike better German Hefes. If there were some head and lacing, my score would be higher.
S - Faint banana, clove, grass
T - Very good. Typical banana, cloves, grass and some bubblegum. Nice yeast flavor with some hop bitterness on the finish.
F - Moderate-thin body and and moderate carbonation that had a seltzer like hint. Dry finish.
O - One of the better American Hefes that I have had. I am hoping that the head and lacing were a fluke and will try this again.

This is a great summer beer, flavorful and an excellent example of a wheat beer. Best served cold on an 80 F day. It reminds me of East End Brewing's Hefeweizen in taste.

I have the feeling this beer would be much better a bit fresher, especially on tap.
However, I had this from a bottle poured into a chalice. Cloudy yellow color with little head or lacing. The smell and taste is pretty classic. Grassy sweet with orange and cloves. Brought while passing through Pittsburgh.

I would give this an outstanding rating except there isn't much foam when pours into a glass.
