Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in Denver, Colorado. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

Bought this at Vintage Cellar expecting a decent beer, but I was unimpressed, I'm normally a fan of hefes.

A - yellow-orange, pours with very little head, no lacing

S - not strong, small hint of orange, not great overall

T -tasted more of clove and orange than clove and banana, the clove seemed heavy, poor aftertaste

M - light body, heavy carb

D -wouldn't recommend, won't try again

Let’s get something straight. Hefe Weizen is not my style. But it was in the fridge and I'm attempting to review within the style. For whatever that’s worth.

It appears a hazy golden yellow with a nice white head which disappears almost completely.
Smell is very fragrant wheat and mellow banana smells.
Taste has a citrus feel not overpowering, a very small sours aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is thicker oily.
Drinkability is lower due to the thicker mouthfeel.

The beer, in a shaker pint, is a cloudy medium-darl yellow, with a lasting one finger white head. The nose is a bit peppery, and loaded with diacetyl. Taste is very clovey, peppery, with a buttery diacetyl overload. There is a nice, strong banana flavor, though, but it's still sub-par. Mouth is thick, but carbonation is too low. This beer is too clovey, not wheaty enough.

I feel sorry to give this one such a low rating, apparently my palate is off or maybe I'm just missing something, oh well, here goes. Poured into a weizen glass.

A - Cloudy yellow concoction, minimal head with some pretty poor retention, no lacing, not entirely appealing, but not necessarily bad either.

S - Very little aroma that I could detect. Some candy like scents.

T - Until now I didn't know what type of beer this was supposed to be, but I never would have guessed hefe. Overly sweet, with no defining profiles, no clove or banana, just candy-like flavoring.

M - Light bodied, sharp carbonation.

D - Not impressed at all. After I consumed it my stomach felt as though I'd just eaten an entire pack of candy. If you're a hefe fan, avoid. If you like candy sweet brews, this is yours.

Poured a very hazy orange with almost no head and zero lacing.

Smelled initially a little sour but after letting it sit for a minute that turned in to a very strong citrus smell.

Taste is very citrusy with light carbonation and a little skunk to it (not that the beer is skunky, but I can't think of a better term to describe it.) Not dissimilar to Harpoon UFO.

Very light carbonation, if you like the taste this is a very drinkable beer but I have to force my way through the flavors.

Poured into the strainer, cloudy head rises slowly then fizzles, smell of a few different citruses, alcohol fumes, and hops. Taste somewhat muddled, alcohol kicks in early, dry finish. Not all that smooth, a lot going on here but it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. Seems like a lot of ingredients went into this Hefe but not that much thinking/brewing. Not terrible but there are better ones out there.

Appearance -Nice hazy straw yellow, good carbonization that leaves thin white head and nice lacing.

Smell -A little light but good yeasty wheat with a citrus tang.

Taste - A bit snappy, like citrus - good. Light aftertaste wish it had a bolder banana -clove profile but still good overall.
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation with medium weight and very smooth.

This beer is easy to drink and a light version of a Hefe in my opinion but I can't complain, pretty good.

Beer pours a slightly cloudy yellow but not as cloudy as I would expect from Hefe....even when I get all the yeast out of the bottle. Large head as expected for a beer this carbonated.

Beer smells of citrus but I don't get much clove or banana smell.

The beer doesn't taste much like many Hefe's I've tried. There was no banana taste which I enjoy and was expecting. There was some pepper flavor but there is a sourness throughout which was unenjoyable. I purchased an entire case of this and am quite dissappointed. I thought I purchased a bad case in Lancaster, PA but I then purchased a single from a six pack shop in York and got a similar sour taste. If this beer can't travel across the state there is something wrong.

Mouthfeel was excellent with the perfect amount of carbonation for the style.

This beer would be very drinkable if it wasn't for the sour taste. With the sourness however I would say this is average. I'm not sure if this beer tastes better on draft but from a bottle I've had better.

A- nice head from the pour. lingered nicely. slightly cloudy gold.

S- yeasty and spicey. A little stanky smelling.

T- A little over filtered tasting. Left a metallic taste on my palate. Spiceyness and breadiness throughout.

M- A little lighter than expected.

O-Not horrible, but not that great. It's a shame that people say this brewery has gone down hill. From what others have noted these beers were incredible examples of traditional German styles.

Poured a characteristic, golden, cloudy with a nice head and good lacing was observed.
Smells of wheat malt, the characteristic yeast dominating both smell and taste.
Taste was yeasty, with wheat malts and some hops for balancing out the flavor profile.
Bubble gum comes to mind as I drink this...although somewhat mild.

Glad to have the opportunity to sample a beer from the brewery. The beer has a viscous, thick appearance, but light and fluffy according to the head formation / retention. Golden to straw in color and very hazy. Aromas are strong of malt, wheat, esters, and especially the phenolics. Bready flavors hit up-front with a solid dose of malt sweetness, banannas, lemons, cookie dough, clove, pineapples and apples. However, a plastic-ey, spicy note may be the deterant. Quite heavy and thick for the style, although it made for creaminess, hurt the drinkability a bit. Spicy and peppery to the palate. Finishes with a long, lingering estery / phenolic flavor that increased the plastic flavors to the point of being difficult to overlook. Too bad too, because this beer really has promise.

Notes taken from '08 NHC.

Pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. In the aroma, dry banana and some spice notes. In the taste, dry banana, and notes of spice, especially clove and cinnamon. A spice like bite and a lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry banana flavor in the aftertaste. A bit thin, but spicy and nice flavors of banana, just about average though.

I had a sixteen ounce pour of this at Amsterdam Ale House in Manhattan's Upper West side. Visually, this is very much like a wheat beer. Quite cloudy, almost impossible to see through, with an intense esthery aroma. The flavor was ok but not all that memorable. Color was a little darker than expected.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a cloudy yellow color with a nice white head in the weizen glass. However, not too much retention as it fades quickly. Nose is light citrus and clove with a bit of grain. The taste has the grain really take over and not much of the yeast comes through. Feel is light. Not too drinkable as the notes from the nose really don't come through and this is quite ordinary.

Appearance - orangey with a white head.

Smell - cloves with citrus and some wheaty scents. a lot of aromas emit from the beer.

Taste - too much citrus to it. lots of flavors, more than my palate can handle.

Mouthfeel - little moderation

Drinkability - easy to drink, but a lot of fruits and wheat complexions.

Decent beer.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a nice foamy head. Nose is citrus and light banana sweetness. Flavor is sweet and sour lemon, with the continuation of the banana backdrop. Very nice brew, a bit thin in the mouthfeel. Thanks to JohnTravolta21 for this bottle.

Appearance: Pours light golden yellow with minimal head and no lacing to speak of.

Smell: Light banana and citrus (lemon?).

Taste: Just like it smells. Tastes of some banana and citrus. Good but not exciting.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and light; medium bodied.

Drinkability: Nice easy drink.

12 oz. brown bottle poured into stemmed pilsner glass. On bottle's rear label is stamped 0177 82 04:54.

Appearance: cloudy tan and orange body, typical of many hefes. Large bubbles assemble at top and immediately die off. Carbonation is very active for this style.

Smell: subtle banana and wheat husks, very zesty lemons.

Taste: Twangy wheat and mildly sweet bananas, lemon rinds and finishes with hop bitterness and a metallic taste.

Mouthfeel: an overpowering twangy bitterness makes for an uneasy mouthfeel. I love hefes, but this is not just the typical wheat twang.

Drinkability: a bit surprised, it's drinkability is only hurt by this uncharacteristic bitterness. It's flavors are fine otherwise. I will try this again, assuming this is just a bad bottle.

It is a pretty light Weizen by all accounts. It is definitely not one of those sweet, bready creations of Germany. But it definitely looks the part.

It pours a fantastic opaque yellow, and is as cloudy as a Weizen should be.

The beer is sweet, with just a little of that "Weizen" taste that is unique to this style of beer. It has a light spiciness, coriander or such, and gets sweeter as it goes down, and is very refreshing.

By and large it is a good, lightly flavored Weizen that won't overpower you, and can drink a lot of!

Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a clear pint glass. No freshness date that is decipherable.

A: Hazy orange-tinged golden color with tall initial head that dissipates quickly and leaves barely any lacing.

S: Pleasant aromas of pear, banana, and clove.

T: Good but not great with a fruity start and middle with lots of esters. The end is very bready and a little overly yeasty, which is unique but leaves a very odd aftertaste.

M: A little thin but plenty of peppery crispness in the finish. A tad drying.

D: A decent hefe but nothing spectacular.

Even when poured with a good deal of violence, I could only generate a moderate head from the bottle. When's the last time I had a German-style wheat beer that didn't have a head the height of a giant stick of cotton candy? What head there was faded quickly. No fun. Has a nice cloudy color and a promising clovey aroma, but in the end is rather thin in the body and light on the dense flavors one would expect in this style. A promising prospect that needs work.

Appearance – The head was rather modest and the body was cloudy and bright orange.

Smell – This one has a nice, yeast base to the nose but lacks the typical banana and clove of the style.

Taste – The wheat makes it way to the tongue, but there’s an almost stinging citrusy twang that tastes like it came “mit limon”.

Mouthfeel – This one is a bit larger than light-bodied with some intense carbonation that had trouble holding up in the mouth.

Drinkability – I really enjoyed drinking this Penn Brewing Hefe. It’s a good beer and went down quickly on a warm summer day. I think it needs some work though to fit the style standard.

A slightly cloudy medium copper/orange with a big foamy head. The smell is very fruity with a hint of grain. Very tasty beer; lots of flavors, fruity, yeasty, definite wheat in the finish. It's very carbonated with a medium/light body. A most drinkable beer with a refreshing clean taste and surprising crispness given its fruitiness.

Off the tap.

Poured a hazy golden orange, thin white head with okay retention.

Smelled like orange peel and coriander with a hint of malts.

Taste was citrusy but also kind of banana like.

Mouthfeel was bubbly and normal body.

Eh, okay. Seemed like it was trying to be a witbier but at the same time it stood apart from that style. Either way, I've had a lot better of both heffewiezen and witbier.

Appearance was a light yellow color with a beautiful head that lasted for longer than expected.

There was not much of a smell to speak of. What I could get was light and sweet.

The taste was tart with a slightle sweet after taste. Suprising, given the lack of smell that could be detected.

The beer felt light on the palate but the tart flavor and good carbonation really gave it a good balance.

I think this is a good example of an American-made Weizen
