Presentation: Pint glass on draft at the brewery.

Appearance: Bright, golden color. Very clear. Low carbonation with thin lacing.

Smell: Little to no smell. Expected to smell all-grain malt. The beer may have been served to cold.

Taste: Malt flavor lingers with strong aftertaste. Really expected this to balance quickly

Mouthfeel: Crisp with a medium body.

Notes: Every time I try this style on draft at the brewery it is different. I have had better in the past from Penn Brewery. (487 characters)

Its a bright bright gold with barely any head. Leaves little lacing. There is a slight hop aroma but not much at all. What it is, is rather spicy. There is a little bit of grainy flavor that is some what sweet. Very easy to drink. The mouth feel is rather bland. simple and rather slick. Overall its a nice beer. But nothing spectacular. (337 characters)

I purchased this in a Penn Variety pack. What a let down. You never know, maybe it was skunked or something. It tasted like cheap beer. In the same variety pack, the Penn Pilsner and Penn Dark were totally sensational.

I would like to try again, maybe on tap. Maybe I just got a bad batch or something. It wasn't old.

I see people at the beer store purchasing it. It can't be that bad. Maybe my taste buds have evolved too much?

Will never buy again. But would like to taste it again to see if it was really skunked or not. (527 characters)

12oz. bottle that I got in the Penn Brewery variety pack. This is the last new beer to try from the variety pack.

Poured a straw yellow color with a small head of foam that dissipated fast that very few rings around the glass. The best part of the appearance was that I saw all those carbonation bubbles rising to the top of the pilsner glass. The aroma was that of what smelled like sour malt or hops, but it you swirled it around a grainy smell emerges. The taste was very grainy with a slight hoppy aftertaste. It was too grainy for my taste buds. The mouthfeel was pretty much average, clean, crisp and with some carbonation. This made for a nice affordable lager and that's it. Nothing too special and although somewhat OK, this was the worst beer out of the variety pack. Not the best beer from Penn Brewery. (817 characters)

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer had a non-existing head and was a nice gold color. The beer had a bit of a fruity smell. The beer I think was old as it was a bit flat tasting. It had a slightly bitter finish. I was not impressed and will not buy again. (279 characters)

Pours an orange copper color with a slight head. The smell is a little faint, but has the presence of sweet malt and some sweet breads. The overall taste is a little weak as well. There is a grain and sweet malt backbone with some bread taste and a faint citrus hop. The mouthfeel is of moderate carbonation. Overall this is an average beer, you can drink one or two but no more. (379 characters)

Serving was a fresh chilled bottle from one of Penn Brewery's variety packs. (purchased in Erie, Pa.)

The pour is a pale gold in colour. With a fairly vigorous pour, an impressive white head is obtained, which lasted longer than I expected. Lacing is definitely evident, even as the head fades.

The nose is very light ... lighter than I expected from a Helles Lager.

First taste is crisp, resinous hops, without much of a sweet malty balancing background .. something I felt was missing for this style.

As the beer warmed, there was more of a hint of maltiness and sweetness, producing a balanced tasting brew. Indeed, the finish is well balanced .. no complaints there.

If Helles Lagers are your 'thing', this one is worth a try. (746 characters)

I found that this beer was just ok. Penn Gold poured to a more hazy golden color rather than crystal clear. A nice white head full of carbonation with great lace down the side of my glass. Average taste but it didn't have the crispness that I found with other beers of this style. Good body with and ok finish. (310 characters)

Served in pilsner glass.
Light copper color and clear with absolutely no head and little carbonation
Sweet appropriate malty aroma,
Good malt flavor and balance for a helles.
Medium mouth feel
Drinkable but lack luster, very average.
Maybe the beer was old or a bad example. I plan to try again to give a fair shake. (318 characters)

Poured from the bottle a nice light gold, with a small and tight head that didn't stick around too long. Smell was average, fairly light, with malt dominating some mild hops. Malt again was the prevailing flavor on the tongue, and it was the carbonation that dominated the mouthfeel, which was light, very crisp, and again, carbonated. Beer was pretty drinkable, enjoyed a few back to back. (390 characters)

Good authentic German style beer, with a fresh taste and no gimmicks. Nice golden color. Head was a little thin out of bottle; may have better head on draft. A relatively simple beer with no complex flavors. A great beer to pair with brats. Also a fine beer for a hot summers day. (280 characters)

Paid around $1.79 for a single...

The beer pours like an American macro lager, clear, golden, not much of a head, very minimal retention and lacing effects. Minimal hops and malt flavor comes from the scent.

The taste is clean, medium carbonated, and a crisp yet sharp hoppy aftertaste. It was a bit stingy in the mouth from the carbonation and is fairly drinkable but I'd rather pay this price for a German import than try another one of these.

Final Thought: This was definitely a suspect/skunked bottle and the beer will be reviewed at a later time. I've had a case of this before and don't recall this backlash from the brew. (632 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Clear and slightly darker than yellow. Good 1 1/2 head that settled to a ring with very little lacing

S: Very mild, mix of sweet malt, citrus hops and a little yeast.

T: Bready, biscuit like, with a sweetness, followed quickly by so tart citrus hops with just a bit of tartness. Finish is clean with no bitterness...

M: Light bodied with good carbonation. Crisp & Clean.

D: Very easy drinking beer, well balanced low ABV, you could drink quite a few of these... but there is just not enough here for me to buy again and again. Good but not fantastic. (594 characters)

Pours a slightly hazy golden straw color with no head formation whatsoever even with aggressive swirling (dirty glass?). In the nose I first get hints of Hallertau hops, a little bit of cooked corn, slight butter, but overall quite clean. On the palate, it's light pils malt all the way, with a nice grainy flavor finishing with a floral note from the hops. A medium low body without a strong carbonation level make this an easy quaffer. However, I'd have to say there isn't a strong enough supporting role for the hops to make this one I'd pick up again. (555 characters)

On recommendation from a guy at church brew works, I moseyed on down the street to Penn

A - Pours a vry light straw color with minimal head and no lacing.

S - Aroma is light with a bit of grainy malt but little overall.

T - Taste was typical for a helles lager with light malty notes but very little flavor overall.

M/D - Mouthfeel is very light and smooth but watery. Very drinkable in the same way all very light beers are drinkable. Would be a good substitute for a bmc. (477 characters)

I bought a "gourmet selection" variety case of Penn Brewery's and there's a few Penn Golds in it . It's off the top, very thin/light ... session beer but leaves me desiring more substance/soul/density/thickness ... Penn's answer to Coors Light / Miller Lite / etc etc.
non-threatening 'safe' beer for the masses .
would be good on very hot humid Summer days . wouldn't dehydrate you too much with it's very low 4% abv .
not one i'd buy outright but not terrible . (463 characters)

Received in a trade from dpodratsky3.

A - Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a mug. Coppery color, clear with thin streams of bubbles rising to the top. Small 1/2 inch head on this one that dissipated quickly with no lacing.

S - Not a whole lot on the nose, smells a little watery. Sweet smell, and a little sour with an absence of hops.

T - Tastes like it smells, needs to have fuller flavor. Some nice grains come through on this after the initial sweetness. No hops whatsoever, but that usually works for me for this type of beer. Ends a little bit sour. Tastes good, but wish it was giving more.

M - Sits fine in the mouth, nice amount of carbination balances out the sweetness.

D - Well, really easy to get down, especially if I'm eating food with it, can drink these all day. (783 characters)

Pours a clean yellow color with a white head. In the aroma, a sweet malt and fresh lager notes. In the taste, a small sweet lager notes, quite fresh and a bit watery. A very small bite, but mainly smooth, and a light bodied mouthfeel, with a small and dry graininess in the aftertaste. Quite fresh, yet a bit sweet, nice, but just about average. (345 characters)

Clear golden color with some frothy white head that disappears pretty quickly, leaves a little residue on top and minimal lacing. Right for the style. Smells malty and slightly sweet but it's on the faint side. Simple.

Taste has a little bit more hop character to it, and some breadyness, but again, very light, not deep. It's refreshing and light, but really... weak. I expected more.

Mouthfeel is sudsy and light, a bit thin. Overall a very refreshing brew, but not as tasty as I thought it'd be. (501 characters)

Penn Gold is that beer that most micro breweries feel that they need to produce to make the local American Adjunct Lager drinkers proud. It's fruity notes make the beer seem more like a Blonde Ale or Cream Ale.

A solid golden color shows a lot of carbonation. Froathy white foam rises and falls rather quickly. No lacing.

A malty/grainy aroma swirls in the glass and struggle to hide the scents of corn sulfurs, fruity esters, and grassy hops.

Flavors also show the part-malt, part-grain flavors. A bit too sweet, but the hops have an earthy-grassy flavor and a bit weak in the balance. Light acidity reminds me of green apples and lemon peel (kinda shandy-like). Still the sulfurs leave the lingering taste of corn and matches.

Sweetness clings to the mouth early but the aggressive carbonation scrubs the malts and grains off of the tongue. The acidity helps with the crispness along with the carbonation. But that co2 and sulfur texture scratches a bit in the end. (971 characters)

Poured in a Pilsner glass this is a clear yellow colored beer with a slight chill haze. A decent white head forms and then falls.

The scent is sweet and full of toasted grain aroma from Munich malt. Hops lend only a mild perfume to the scent.

The taste begins sweet and mild with mostly a neutral taste and a little bitter hop in the finish. The flavor doesn't develop much more though, this is just a mild mannered lager without any subtle or outstanding flavors to talk about.

The mouthfeel is OK.

Well this is OK but really I was expecting more. On the plus side though there isn't anything bad at all about this lager, it is just rather mild mannered and lacking in anything different or outstanding. (716 characters)

Drinking slightly chilled, and pouring into a pint glass it pours a gold color with 2 cm of creamy and clingy white head that clears to a nice surface layer.

Aroma is of sour mash with lots of grainy, yeasty w/ some grainy hops. Overall, it was like sniffing a barley field. not really my cup of tea.

Sipping, I taste a "sharp" sour malt along with some slight spicy hops and a huge grassy finish. Nothing very exciting to me.

Decent balance but a thin like most in its style. Nothing spectacular but represents the style well.

Very easy to drink, but it reminds me of Budweiser a bit, which I don't really dig on. This isn't my favorite style but it was worth a try. Not a bad session beer though if you like the style. (732 characters)

On tap across the street from PNC Park, it was served in a standard pint, the beer is a hazy gold with a smallish bone white head. Nice lacing.

The nose is light grains and a whisper of floral hops. Its really hard to pick-up much of anything.

The taste is a mix of slightly sweet grains balanced with mild hoping.

The beer is crisp with good carbonation and a bit of residual oiliness.

Easy drinker, if they could up the aroma a bit it would be top notch! (461 characters)

I got this on tap at Tank's Taproom in Tampa, Fl. It poured very little head that had a nice slow retention. There was thin to no lacing. The color was a deep gold. The smell had an odd sweet aroma, something that I know I have smelled before, but I cannot place. The taste was the same as the smell but better blended. The mouthfeel was an excelent smooth feeling. All in all a fair drink. Don't drink and review. (414 characters)
