A: Pours a amberish orange color with a small slightly off white foam head with not much retention. There is ample lacing.

S: A decent amount of rye spices, caramel, wheat toast and a surprising amount of citrus hops.

T: Starts off with a small amount of rye spices, very faint. In the middle there is some more rye and citrus hops. Both flavors are tasty but they seem to be fighting each other. On the back end the caramel and toast come out more overpowering the rye and hops.

M: A medium bodied beer that is kind of dry. Leaves a hodge podge of flavors on the palate. Some bitter hops, thick malts and some bourbon.

O: Not my favorite offering at all by the Penn Brewing Company. The flavors are all there but it is but not in balance. It is a quite average IPA.

Appears a deep ruby amber hue with a light tan khaki head forming thick and leaving fine even lacing beind on the sides of my chalice. Aroma is pretty nice citrus bursts with herbal leaves. A really nice fresh hopped hop nose going on with a hint of underlying bready caramel malts to balance things out. Much more enjoyable than their standard Rye PA. Robust hop character with spicy rye, caramel malt breadiness in the finish. Super hoppy with hop pellet like bitterness a bit of leafy/vegetable fresh hop notes as well pretty big beer, who knows what the alcohol content is considering it's still labeled as a rye pale ale. Mouthfeel is brash with hop oils flowing strong and bitter definitely finishes bone dry with a juicy malt layer middle and spicy rye finish. Overall this beer is a nice hoppy harvest fall beer, drinkability is nice solid local beer from Penn I'm glad they got with the program and brewed a wet hopped ale.

I've been nothing but disappointed with Penn since their reopening and subsequent old man ass whooping, but I couldn't resist buying this to give me some small connection to the motherland of Steel City. Anyway, hopefully this will change my view.

Poured into a snifter.

3.5 A: Clear, deep orange amber color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is about average and a large ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Quite a peculiar, but welcoming nose. Spicy and herbal hops with hints of citrus. The rye opens up as it warms to add the signature "spicy earthiness." Caramel malts and neutral malt sweetness add good balance. Whether from the rye or the hops, it almost seems like there are some pumpkin spices, along the lines of cinnamon and nutmeg, in here.

3.0 T: Despite what the nose suggested, the taste falls flat. The spiciness, the hops, and especially the malts are subdued. Moderate bitterness with just a touch of spicy and earthy hop flavor. The rye gets lost under the bitterness. The malts aren't as sweet as I thought they would be and the balance is lost.

3.0 M: Medium body. A bit too much carbonation and a bit too chewy, especially for the body. Finally, the finish leaves a drying bitterness.

3.0 D: Again Penn lets me down. They need to stop beating up old men and brewing these experimental disasters and get back to basics - stellar German beer.

A - Not the prettiest IPA I seen more like a brown ale or even stout in darkness. Head is also very minimal with only a slight lace ring but it does have a redeeming bit of stickiness.

S - Well the rye is definitely in the nose very spicy with a touch of hops and sweet bready malts. Wow that smells good.

T - Starts off with an aggressive bit of bitterness which flies right over any sweetness or spicy rye flavors and finishes bitter and dry with the flavors of pine lingering on the palate. Could use more balance...

M - With such a dry flavor it's kind of hard to enjoy but pretty easy to drink. Sipper for sure.

Overall after enjoying the imperial pilsner I am perplexed on this beer. It is an IPA by standards but one bitter hoppy hoppy bastard with little balance from the malt or rye. I know it's a harvest "wet hop" ale but if they toned down the hops or balanced with a better malt it could be more enjoyable for sure. Recommended the Imperial Pilsner instead...

ARGH and I have to finish a bomber!

Pours a orange-ish to deep amber color with a small light tan head. In the aroma, fresh hops and dry rye. In the taste, dry hops, fruity rye, and a nice dry hopped end. A small hop bite and medium to lighter bodied outhfeel, with a dry fresh hop in the aftertaste. A bit thin and dry for the style, decent though.

Penn Harvest Rye PA

Pours a clear dark amber color, off white khaki head and some lace. Hoppy aroma, with fresh hops and biscuity malt complimenting. In the taste, nice and bitter, with a good amount of peppery rye spice. Strong hop flavor, citrus rind, earthy and pungent. The rye plays nicely with the hop bitterness. Caramel, bready malts accompany. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good sting of carbonation and hop bite. Overall, a nice offering from Penn, alot different than the usual lineup.

A wonderful example of rye IPA.

Opens up with very bready, almost fruitcake-like smell. Appealing color - deep mahogany - and enticing medium head.

Coniferous mouthfeel, coupled with extensive rye bread aroma brings up Eastern European memories of hearty food and simple tastes.

Very tasty, almost like eating dark, sour, chewy, flavorful rye loaf - yet, supremely balanced with sophisticated hop bouquet.

I did not expect this from an unknown Pittsburgh brewery. Almost sessionable, I can drink this with sausage, sauerkraut, smoked bacon and dark rye bread toast with garlic for as long as it's flowing'.

Kudos to the brewery, this is a one well done!

Typical of the style. Easy drinking but cold have used a bit more hoppy bite.

There's something weird about this beer. If its supposed to be an IPA, it's an odd one. There certainly are a lot of hops in this one, judging from what I'm seeing as my hop allergy kicking in. But the body is all wrong and too soft and just not bringing it. Which I could say for the beer as a whole. Not sure what the goal was here, but it isn't quite working.

On-tap at Mad Mex at South Hills Mad Mex.

A: Served with a half-inch creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Reddish brown color.

S: Subtle hop and bready aroma

T: Subdued hop presence with a smooth finish.

M: Moderate carbonation, very drinkable

O: Overall this is an unspectacular but satisfying brew, however I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out again.
