Typical of the style. Easy drinking but cold have used a bit more hoppy bite.

This brew pours a dark brown/red, which is partially clear. There is a nice two finger tan head and fairly thick lacing which stays on the glass until the end. Remnants of the head also stay on top of the brew until the end.

The smell is malty and piney. There is also the peppery rye smell. There are bready and caramel malt smells as well.

The taste starts with roasted malts moving to a bready, peppery rye taste, caramel then piney hops on the backend. There is a dry bitter aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is thick bready and chewy.

Overall this a decent rye beer. It is not quite as hoppy as a rye IPA but that might be good for some people who don't like an overload of hops but to tell the truth the rye is not all that strong in this brew either. If you want to try a rye beer that is not too bitter then try this one. If you want a rye IPA there are better ones out there such as Ruthless Rye from Sierra Nevada.

Dark copper to sienna in color. Hightop pour leaves a tiny quarter-inch glossy head. It STILL laces with elegance.

Very rye spicy and pine and earthy hops. Smells a little herbal. Very toasty for a rye IPA.

Rigorous rye with both pine and pithy citrus hop notes. Dextrinous and chewy. Bitter, but still retaining some wort-y grain sugar. Browning apple, maltose, and caramel malts. Hops lose the battle in the finish. Hefty rye maltiness all throughout. Finely-tuned carbonation creates some graininess on the tongue. Doesn't drink down any better than the next beer.

If you like unadulterated rye malts in your rye beer, this is for you. The hoppiness is dumbed-down, but enjoyably complementary.

There's something weird about this beer. If its supposed to be an IPA, it's an odd one. There certainly are a lot of hops in this one, judging from what I'm seeing as my hop allergy kicking in. But the body is all wrong and too soft and just not bringing it. Which I could say for the beer as a whole. Not sure what the goal was here, but it isn't quite working.

On-tap at Mad Mex at South Hills Mad Mex.

A: Served with a half-inch creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Reddish brown color.

S: Subtle hop and bready aroma

T: Subdued hop presence with a smooth finish.

M: Moderate carbonation, very drinkable

O: Overall this is an unspectacular but satisfying brew, however I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out again.
