Deep copper color. Cluster of foam settled to a quarter inch level.

A little perfumey, very much malty; at least, here in the nose. Toastiness, dried fruit tartness, and a hint of apple. Mild, yet pleasing.

Amber toast and caramel malts, but with a funky wild yeast note. Tartness smacks a little, like a tannic dryness in the finish with an almost minty fresh feeling. Apple is the most prominent fruit note, but even it's not leaning far forward. Tea-like hops are evident, but weak, as they should be. Enjoyably soft. Very drinkable. Wily carb, but a gentle body. Almost passable in feel.

Hey, it's not in Penn's arena, so you can't really falter them for wanting to have a little fun for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. One thumb up.

Style: American Wild Ale

LOOK: Ontap at Fat Heads for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. This is a collaboration with several local brewers at Penn Brewery. Pours a clear light amber, with a white foam that recedes to a ring.

SMELL: Musty aroma, with some apple sweetness.

TASTE: Sharp tartness, a bit dry. Somewhat fruity, with notes of unripe cherry and lemon. This wild ale has a bit of earthiness and woody flavor to it as well. Aftertaste reminiscent of vinegar, finishes with a dry sour. From a brewery steeped in German tradition, Penn has been developing more and more craft offerings. This was an impressive step into bold new territory, and I would consider this offering a success.

FEEL: On the light side of medium bodied, dry, and well carbonated. As mentioned in the inaugural review, there are some tannins working hard to dry this beer out. Very well done.

OVERALL: We're not in Russian River or Lambic country, but this is a nice take on a wild ale. Has a bite, good dryness and solid flavor. I hope that Penn keeps this recipe and brews it again someday, as I really enjoyed this one.

had on tap at blue dust during 2013 PCBW. Pour is transparent copper with tight bubbled light tan head. Nose has a lot of spicy rye, light sour note, a bit vegetal, notes of grain behind and some dark berry very light. Taste has rye up front, a fair amount of grain and light dough. A bit stronger cherry note, faint touch of sour. Body is light, softly carbonated, a touch syrupy in the feel.

My 3,000th review.

Interesting beer. The fruit and berry tone on this is really nice. Sharp, pointed, and distinct. What is it? Raspberries? At first the somewhat roasted tone reminded me of something I have tried from this brewery, that I can't quite recall. I'd have to do a side-by-side to find out for certain. But that doesn't matter so much.

The sour edge is nice and oddly works with the beer; though more so after I am sipping on it for a while.

Pennsylvania Brewing Company is one of the last breweries I would expect a wild ale from. And oddly, this is a fairly interesting brew.

I was really hoping to try and get something off-the-wall and unique for my 3,000th. But as fate would have it, I didn't have to go very far.

And as far as the beer goes. I like sours, and I like this one.
