Pours a mostly clear amber, with minimal carbonation or head. Smells of hop/malt split, but there seems to be multiple distinct hop aromas. Moderately bitter taste that stays, surrounded by the malt/hop mix, accented by alcohol. Medium consistency to the mouthfeel, fairly easy to drink. It was not exactly what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It would be great if they could can this brew so it would be easy to bring a summit beer worthy of a 4000 foot New Hampshire peak.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #67 (August 2012):

LOOK: Quick frothing, clear pale amber

SMELL: Grapefruit rind, passion fruit, pineapple skin, green peppercorn, herbal, estery, crackers

TASTE: Smooth, crisp snap, bitter, grapefruit pith, heather, peppery, lime leaves, dry toast, yeast, slightly warming alcohol, very bitter finish

Wow, talk about being caught off-guard. Yeah, we saw the 82 IBU’s on the label, but we run into that on nearly a daily basis. 4000’er rakes down our taste buds with bitterness and a pretty wild flavor profile. Even the raw nature of this beer does not distract our palate from the massive hop presence here.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, bright, caramel coloring with a frothy, foamy, off-white head that settles into a sparse surface coating. Aromas of spicy hops forward, with a toffee and caramel backbone, cedar notes, and a solid bitterness. Flavors are tangy sweet forward, with toffee leading the charge, followed quickly by pepper spice, resiny cedar and bitterness, and a solid ribbon of tart grapefruit. Very well layered flavors. Robust and light bodied at the same time, with a very bitter, resiny aftertaste. This one gets big at the end. Bitter and slightly tart linger on a dry, resiny finish. This is a good IPA.
